PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Romuald Augustin had 13 points to lead Providence to its seventh straight win, a 60-55 victory over South Carolina Saturday night.

Erron Maxey added 11 points for the Friars (9-3).

South Carolina (8-3), which had a five-game win streak snapped, was led Tony Kitchings with 12 and Aaron Lucas and Jamel Bradley with 10 each.

Providence led 35-27 at halftime, but had to ward off a second-half rally by South Carolina to preserve the win.

The Gamecocks took their only lead, 51-50, on a free throw by Antonio Grant with 6:15 left.

Providence took the lead right back lead on an Abdul Mills layup, and held South Carolina to four points the rest of the way.

Providence led by as many as 17 in the first half, taking a 24-7 lead with 9:28 left in the half on a Maxey jumper.

South Carolina was limited to 32 percent shooting, but enjoyed an advantage from the free throw line. The Gamecocks converted 19 of 29 free throw attempts, compared to 6 for 11 by Providence.

Marcus Douthit had five blocks and eight rebounds for Providence.
