PROVIDENCE, R. I. - Providence College and the Providence Civic Center today announced that they have reached an agreement on a new three-year contract extension. The new contract will ensure that Providence College's men's basketball team will play all of its home games in the 13,100-seat facility through the 2002-2003 basketball season.
In addition, Providence College and the Providence Civic Center Authority will jointly sponsor a new city-wide youth program aimed at students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Providence College men's and women's basketball teams will host annual basketball clinics for these school-age students. The partnership will also include providing these students with complimentary tickets to attend selected Providence College basketball games as guests of Providence College and the Providence Civic Center Authority.
In making the announcement, Providence College Assistant Vice President for Athletics John Marinatto commented, "The Providence Civic Center has certainly been a major component to the ongoing success of our basketball program for the past three decades. It has been the site of many great wins and is a large part of our basketball tradition." Marinatto added, "I am also equally excited about the fact that we will be working with the Civic Center Authority to develop a formal youth program for the benefit of school children throughout the city because this is truly consistent with Providence College's tradition of community outreach."
Providence College moved its men's basketball games to the city-owned facility in 1973. Since that time, they have played a total of 482 games there and own a 344-138 record. In the 28 years the Friars have played there, they have drawn 4,136,239 fans for an average of over 9,192 per game. In addition, the two have also paired up over the years to host a number of prestigious national and regional tournaments in both basketball and ice hockey - including the 1985 NCAA Men's Basketball Eastern Regionals and the 1995 and 2000 NCAA Frozen Fours.
Marinatto pointed out that Providence College and the Civic Center Authority will continue to explore additional ways in which they can work together to provide community service programs to benefit the city's school-age youth.
Joshua Teverow, Chairman of the Providence Civic Center Authority echoed Marinatto's comments in saying, "The Civic Center and its Authority are extremely proud of our longstanding relationship with Providence College, and we are very happy to enter into this new long-term agreement." Teverow underscored efforts to strengthen the Authority's relationship with Providence College, noting, "We are especially excited about working with Providence College to help the youth of the city develop basketball and sportsmanship skills by co-sponsoring these basketball clinics and by providing them the opportunity to attend NCAA Division I basketball games as our guests."
Teverow pointed out that the Authority has also made a commitment to attempt to obtain funding to further improve the aesthetics of the facility, and he said, "I am sure Providence College basketball fans will be pleased with what they see as we continue to upgrade our building to be competitive with the newer arenas in the region."
