Friars Win Home Opener, 77-66, Over Siena

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team won its 2000 home-opener on Saturday, December 2nd, defeating Siena College, 77-66, at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
The Friars (3-3 overall) led the Saints (2-2) 41-32 at halftime, and held off a furious comeback attempt by the up-tempo Siena team. PC senior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) led all five Friar starters in double-figures with her second double-double of the season. The 6'2" senior forward scored a team-leading 16 points, grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, handed out three assists and blocked four shots.
Classmate Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) scored 13 points and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes and freshman Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) scored a career-high 13 points with six rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes.
Rounding out the PC scorers in double-figures were junior Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) who scored 10 points with four rebounds, five assists and a steal, and freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.), who posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in 30 minutes.
Siena was led by Gunta Basko, who scored 20 points. The Saints saw the Friars extent their lead to as many as 14 points with 15:58 remaining in the second half before Siena made a run with a barrage of three-pointers to close to within six points, 68-62, with 4:44 remaining in the contest.
The Friars withstood the Siena three-point bombing and closed out the game by hitting their free throws in the final two minutes.
Providence returns to action on Monday, December 4th when they host Fairfield University at 7:00 p.m. at PC's Alumni Hall.
