KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the UMKC Kangaroos, 60-53, in the opening round of the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., on Friday, November 24. Freshman Chris Anrin (Varmdo, Sweden) led the Friars with a team-high 15 points.
Providence sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led PC in the first half as he scored nine of his 13 points in the first 20 minutes of action. In a low scoring first half, PC held a 23-16 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Friars dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Kangaroos, 23-10.
Paced by the strong play of Anrin, the Friars improved their shooting in the second half. Anrin came out of halftime firing from behind the three-point arc as he connected on four of seven shots. PC held a 19-point lead with 2:25 remaining, but the Kangaroos battled back and got the lead down to six points. However, the deficit proved to be too much for UMKC as the PC defense held on for the win.
Freshman guard Michael Watson (Kansas City, Mo.) was the leading scorer for the Kangaroos with 16 points in 31 minutes of action.
With the win, the Friars (2-1) advance in the winners' bracket of the Engergia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament and will battle Creighton (2-0) on Saturday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m. EST.
