PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated the University of New Hampshire, 2-1, in women's soccer action on Wednesday, October 4 at Providence, R.I. Senior midfielder Kim Carr (Hanover, Mass.) netted what proved to be the game winner to give the Friars the decision.

New Hampshire scored the game's first goal when junior midfielder Sarah Sargent (Glastonbury, Conn.) converted on a shot inside the box at 1:38. After a scramble in front of the Friar net, Sargent gained control of the ball following a Jess Halas (Danbury, Conn.) pass to give the Wildcats the early advantage.

Providence tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore back Katie Auger (Putnam, Conn.) scored on a long shot that was out of the reach of UNH goalkeeper Stephanie Springer (Solana Beach, Calif.). Auger recorded her goal following a Leila Marrash (Fairfield, Conn.) pass to even the game for the Friars.

Carr scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 23:34 mark when she blasted a shot by Springer from the top of the box.

Providence was able to hold onto its 2-1 halftime lead as UNH peppered Friar freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) with six shots over the games final 45 minutes. Haines' second half play proved to be the difference as the Friars earned their fourth victory of the year.

In goal, Springer and Kristen Ouellette (Weatogue, Conn.) combined to stop six Friar shots. Providence's Haines recorded seven saves in the victory.

With the win, Providence improved its record to 4-8-0 overall. New Hampshire's record fell to 2-9-0 overall following the loss.
