PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- West Virginia defeated Providence College, 2-0, in women's soccer action at Providence, R.I. on Sunday, October 22.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead at 8:16 of the first half when Vanessa Heppeler blasted a low shot under Friar freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines. Julie Smith sealed the win for the Mountaineers when she headed in a cross at 71:57 to give WVU a 2-0 lead.
West Virginia goalkeeper Melissa Haire made seven saves in the shutout. Haines registered four stops for the Friars.
With the win, West Virginia improved to 14-4 overall, while Providence dropped to 5-11-1 overall.
Providence College returns to action on Tuesday, October 24 at Holy Cross at 3:00 p.m.
