PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College junior volleyball standout Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) was named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week for the week ending October 1, the league office announced earlier today.

Katinger earned this award after a strong performance during a 2-1 week for the Friars, including a 3-1 win over West Virginia. In the WVU match, she recorded 23 kills, 20 digs and a .458 hitting percentage. Her 16 kills and 17 digs also headed a PC attack that took three of four games from Northeastern on September 26. For the week, Katinger tallied 47 kills (4.7 per game), 54 digs (5.4 per game) and a .339 hitting percentage.

Katinger shares this award with senior outside hitter Christi Girton from the University of Notre Dame.

Earlier this season, Katinger was named to the 2000 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team as she led the league last season in kills with 4.94 per game while ranking sixth in digs with 3.39 per game. Her efforts earned her a spot on the 1999 All-BIG EAST Second Team. Katinger was also ranked 22nd in the nation in kills per game. As a sophomore, she also set the single season record for kills with 504 in 1999.

Providence is currently 13-6 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST this season. The Friars are next in action on Friday, October 6, when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take on the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
