Providence, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer standout Christy Merrihew (Fr., Trumbull, Conn.) has been named the BIG EAST's Co-Rookie of the Week for the week ending September 26th. The first year midfielder shares the award with Rutgers' freshman midfielder Jamie Jandasek. Merrihew scored the first goal of her career and the only one of the game in PC's 1-0 shutout win at St. John's on Sunday, September 26th. The five-foot, two-inch midfielder scored on a crossing shot that went off the Red Storm goalkeeper and into the net for the Friars' win.

She becomes the first Providence College women's soccer player to receive one of the BIG EAST's weekly awards since the league began awarding them in 1995. The victory over St. John's evened the Friars' record at 1-1-0 in the BIG EAST's Northeast Division and improved PC to 2-5-0 overall. The Friars return to action on Friday, October 1st when they host Boston College in a BIG EAST league game beginning at 3:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.

A former standout soccer player at Trumbull High School, Merrihew played on three straight championship teams at the Connecticut school. She is the daughter of Brydon and Annette Merrihew of Trumbull, Connecticut.
