Providence, R.I. - Senior midfielder Kelly McCusker (Simsbury, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season with 1:26 gone in the second overtime to give the Providence College Friars a 2-1 overtime win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers Monday afternoon at Glay Field.
The win, the first for new head coach Tracy DiMillio Kerr, gives the Friars a 1-3-0 record while Sacred Heart falls to 0-3-0 on the year.
McCusker took a crossing pass from freshman Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.) and fired a shot from 15-yards out that beat goalkeeper Carlin Guarneri.
After a scoreless first half, Sacred Heart scored first at the 83:40 mark as Elena Rosero's shot deflected off a Providence defender past goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Sr., Whitman, Mass.).
PC got the equalizer at 87:56 when Jill Flanagan (Jr., Yorktown Hts., N.Y.) outmuscled a Sacred Heart defender along the goal line and delivered a short crossing pass that Caitlyn Welsh (So., Winter Springs, Fla.) was able to head past a diving Guarneri.
The Friars dominated the play for most of the game outshooting Sacred Heart by a a 17-4 margin in the game. Guarneri made eight saves in goal for Sacred Heart, while Ross made just two saves for the Friars.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, September 19th when the Friars visit Georgetown for a noon contest against the Hoyas.
