PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, the Providence College Friars scored two consecutive goals to earn a 3-3 tie against the No. 1 ranked New Hampshire Wildcats in women's ECAC hockey action on Sunday, Nov. 29 at PC's Schneider Arena.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first when Nicki Luongo fired in a slap shot on the power play at 5:49 of the first. UNH struck again in the first period when Melisa Heitzman one-timed a shot past PC goaltender Sara DeCosta to finish off a two-on-one breakaway at 15:42.
Liz Monteith increased the Wildcat lead to 3-0 with a goal at 2:32 of the second before Val Bono got the Friar offense going with the team's first tally of the game at 5:19 of the second. Bono blasted a shot from the left point during a power play that beat UNH netminder Alicia Roberts.
The Friars came to life in the third period as Jen Bill poked in a rebound at 4:18 for PC's second goal. Katie Lachapelle evened the game at 3-3 when she scored on a breakaway at 5:38 of the third period.
UNH peppered DeCosta with 13 shots in the third but the West Warwick, R.I. native backstopped the Friar defense through the final period and into overtime to earn the tie. DeCosta finished the game with 39 stops. Roberts recorded 14 saves for the Wildcats.
Providence College will return to action at Yale on Dec. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
