Providence, R.I. - The Providence College Friars capped a four-game weekend series with the University of Maine Black Bears by sweeping a Sunday doubleheader with 10-4 and 9-3 wins. The two victories gave the Friars four wins on the weekend and ran their current winning streak to 13 games, just one off the school record of 14 set during the 1995 season.

The weekend sweep improves Providence to 19-3 on the season while Maine goes to 7-11 overall.

Game one of the Sunday twinbill saw the Friars get off to a fast start by scoring seven runs in the first inning of freshman lefthander Rusty Tucker. All the runs came after two outs. Paul Costello, Jeremy Sweet, Jamie Athas, Dan Conway and Jason Hairston all drove in one run while Angelo Ciminiello capped the inning with a two run single.

An unearned run in the third made it 8-0 before Maine scored two in the fourth on an rbi-single by rightfielder Keith Genest and a bases loaded walk to catcher Kregg Jarvais.

PC's Keith Reed hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, his seventh of the season and Mike O'Keefe drove in the Friars' final run with a groundout in the sixth.

The Black Bears closed out the scoring in the seventh when shortstop Quin Peel had a run scoring single that drove in Mike Ross who had doubled.

Senior Josh Burnham improved his record to 4-0 on the season with a seven-inning complete game. Tucker saw his record fall to 2-2 on the season for Maine.

In the second game, the Friars again got off to a fast start with two runs in the first and three in the second. Reed drove in one run via a fielder's choice and then came around to score on an rbi double off starter Kris Ehmke. In the second, Mike Scott drew a bases loaded walk, Ciminiello singled in one run and Reed picked up another rbi on a fielder's choice for a 5-0 PC lead.

The Black Bears cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the third off PC starter Rob Corraro as the senior righthander gave up a solo homer to Kregg Jarvais and a two-run shot to Mike Ross.

That was as close as Maine would get though. The Friars broke the game open in the fourth when Reed doubled home Scott and Costello drilled a bases loaded double to right that made it 8-3 for the Friars who would add one more in the sixth for the 9-3 win.

With the win, Corraro pitched a seven inning complete game to run his record to 5-0 on the season. Ehmke falls to 1-1 for Maine. PC has now won eight in a row in the all-time series with Maine and hasn't lost to the Black Bears since April 8, 1994. Maine leads the all-time series with Providence, 20-14.

PC will put its winning streak on the line Tuesday, March 23rd when they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts to face the UMass Minutemen in a 2:30 p.m. game. The Friars return home to face Rhode Island at Hendricken Field on Wednesday, March 24th at 2:30 p.m.
