PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Jamel Thomas scored 20 points and Sean Connolly added 19 to lead Providence over Villanova 85-72 on Tuesday night.
Villanova (15-6, 6-5 Big East), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, was led by John Celestand's game-high 24 points.
The Friars (13-7, 6-4) went up 61-38 on a Thomas jumper midway through the second half before the Wildcats rallied with a 23-8 run, sparked by T.J. Caouette's eight points. Caouette's tap-in with 2:14 left then closed the deficit to 75-70, but the Friars pulled away by sinking 10 consecutive free throws.
The Wildcats took an 11-5 lead after five minutes, helped by Celestand's consecutive 3-pointers. The Friars then put together a 31-15 rally the rest of the half, sparked by Connolly's 4-for-6 3-point shooting, to take a 36-26 advantage into the break.
The Friars, who won their eighth straight at home over Villanova, held the Wildcats to 33 percent shooting for the game on 22-for-66 shooting, far below their average of 46.3 percent.
Erron Maxey added 12 points and Justin Farley had 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Providence. Howard Brown had 14 points and Caouette had 13 for Villanova.
