RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Reserve Ron Kelley scored 21 points and North Carolina State avenged an early-season loss to Providence with an 92-86 victory over the Friars Wednesday night in the first round of the NIT.

Providence (16-14) trailed by as many as 15 in the second half but trimmed the margin to 88-84 after two short jumpers by Jamel Thomas in the final minute.

But Justin Gainey sank four straight free throws and Anthony Grundy made a midcourt steal and iced the game with a two-hand slam with 5.5 seconds left.

N.C. State lost 80-69 to Providence on Nov. 24. The Friars finished the season losing six of their last eight games.

Adam Harrington scored 18 for N.C. State (19-14), getting 12 in the first half on four 3-pointers, and Gainey finished with 14 points.

Damon Thornton, Kenny Inge and Grundy added 10 points each for the Wolfpack.

Thomas, the leading scorer in the Big East, led Providence with 25 points. Sean Connolly added a career-high 24, scoring 15 in the second half.

The Wolfpack rode hot perimeter shooting to a 12-point halftime advantage.

Harrington gave N.C. State the lead for good on three straight 3-pointers in a 51-second span. His third 3 made it 20-16 with 11:09 left in the half and started a 15-4 spurt. Grundy ended the run with a 3-pointer and a floating one-hander that gave N.C. State a 35-20 lead with 4:50 left before halftime.

Providence managed only two baskets in 19 possessions over a 10:29 span of the first half, missing 11 of 13 shots and committing six turnovers.
