MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Jamal Thomas had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead Providence past West Virginia 77-68 in a Big East contest Wednesday night.
Providence (14-8, 7-5 Big East) never trailed. The Friars used an aggressive man-to-man defense to force 20 turnovers and win for just the second time in five games.
West Virginia (9-13, 3-9) lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
Providence, which beat West Virginia by three in overtime last month, took its biggest lead, 42-23, with 1:16 left in the half on a pair of free throws by Kendrick Moore.
West Virginia pulled within eight points twice in the second half, the last time on a jumper by Marcus Goree with 3:53 left. But Thomas answered with a 3-pointer and West Virginia never threatened again.
Goree led West Virginia with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jarett Kearse added 14 points and Elton Scott had 13.
Sean Connolly and Erron Maxey each added 11 points for the Friars and Moore finished with 10.
West Virginia hit just 6 of 15 free throws yet made 6 of 14 3-pointers.
