PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College's All-BIG EAST and All-American candidate, Jamel Thomas scored a game high 29 points and sophomore forward Erron Maxey had a career high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds as the Friars held off a stubborn Texas-Pan American Bronc team, 88-78 at the Providence Civic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Providence jumped out to a 48-28 half-time lead, but saw Texas-Pan Am, behind the hot shooting of sophomore guard Brian Merriweather (25 points) and junior Larry Jackson (22 points), cut the lead to 60-57 with 8:28 left in the second half before PC got hot again on the way to the win.

Providence is now 2-2 on the season while Texas-Pan American is 0-3. The Friars had five players in double figures in the game. Besides Thomas and Maxey, freshman Sean Connolly added 15, senior guard Corey Wright had a career high 12 points and sophomore Jamaal Camah added 10 in his first career start.

The Friars opened their huge halftime lead by shooting 58.6% (17-29) from the floor while UTPA struggled making just 38.7% (12-31) in the first stanza. Maxey had 12 of his 20 points on five-for-six shooting as most of his came underneath the hoop.

In the second half, PC opened their biggest lead of the game at 51-30 at the 19:19 mark before they went cold. Over the next 11 minutes the Broncs got hot. Merriweather and Jackson each had ten points on a pair of field goals and two threes each. When Larry Gibbs hit an eight-foot jumper to make it 60-57, PC called timeout to regroup. After PC's Camah missed two free throws, Erron Maxey got a rebound, laid it in and got fouled. His three-point play was followed by three long range bombs from Sean Connolly and the Friars' lead was back to ten at 73-63 with 3:41 left to play.

Thomas added five points and Wright got and easy layup off a steal to increase Providence's lead to 80-65 with two minutes left. Texas-Pan Am would get as close as eight points in the game but it wasn't enough as PC prevailed, 88-78, in their first ever meeting with the Broncs of Texas-Pan American.

The Friars shot 50.9% (29-57) on the game to 45.6% (31-68) for Texas-Pan American. Providence won the battle of the boards (36-32) for the first time this season.

The Friars return to action on Tuesday, November 24 when they host the North Carolina State Wolfpack at 8:00 p.m. in Providence. Texas-Pan American is back in action on Monday, November 23rd when they travel to Pittsburgh to meet the Panthers at 7:30 p.m.
