vs. VILLANOVA (26-21-1, 10-10)
Hendricken Field - Providence, Rhode Island
Friday-Saturday, May 14-15, 1999
FRIARS VS. VILLANOVA...The Friars and Wildcats have met 55 times in the series history with Villanova holding a 28-27 edge in the all-time series. At Providence, the Friars are 10-14 against the Wildcats. At Villanova, the Friars have a winning record, 15-11. At neutral sites, the Friars are 2-3 against Villanova. The last time the two schools met was March 28th and 29th of last season as the Friars swept the three-game series with 8-2, 11-3 and 23-3 wins. As of May 5th, the Wildcats were in sixth place in the BIG EAST with a 10-10 league record. Villanova plays host to West Virginia on May 8-9 while the Friars are idle this week.
BIG EAST STANDINGS...With the sweep of St. John's last weekend, the Friars clinched a spot in the 1999 BIG EAST Tournament at Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey. As of May 5th, Notre Dame and Rutgers have also clinched playoff berths.
END OF AN ERA... On October 6, 1998 the Providence College administration announced that it would discontinue the baseball team as a varsity sport following the 1999 season. The decision was made in order to comply with Title IX regulations regarding gender equity in athletics. Baseball is the oldest sport at Providence College and has gone to the NCAA regionals twice in the last ten years. The final home game played at Hendricken Field will be against Villanova on May 15, 1999. Other sports that were discontinued by the college were golf and men's tennis.

With three more wins, Hickey will be the first coach to reach 100 wins in three seasons at Providence College. He served five years as the assistant coach to Paul Kostacopoulos at Providence from 1992 to 1996.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASEBALL...All-time record: 75 seasons - 1124-855-13 (.568)....

AWARDS AND HONORS...Friars righthander Marc DesRoches and right fielder Neal McCarthy (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) were named the BIG EAST Pitcher and Rookie of the Week respectively for the week ending May 3rd. DesRoches pitched a five-hit, one-run complete game on May 2, in PC's 9-1 win over St. John's. He struck out seven and walked one. This is the second time he has received this honor this season. McCarthy took Rookie of the Week honors by going 6-11 (.545) with a homer and eight rbi's in the Friars' sweep of St. John's.
40 WINS...PC's 40 wins this season mark just the second time in school history that the Friars have won 40 or more games in a season. The most wins in PC history are 44 and that was done by the 1995 team that received an At-Large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
RECORD STREAK...The Friars put together a school record 15-game winning streak between March 5th and March 24th. The previous record was 14 set during the 1995 campaign. PC set the record with an 8-4 win over the University of Rhode Island on March 24th.
DOCTOR BASEBALL...Senior third baseman Angelo Ciminiello (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) has been selected as the BIG EAST Conference's Scholar Athlete of the Year. He receives a $4,000 postgraduate scholarship. The St. James, N.Y. native plans on attending medical school with plans to become a heart surgeon. He will attend the prestigious Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia.
GREAT SCOTT....Friars' outfielder Mike Scott (So., Darien, Conn.) has had a tremendous rookie season. After sitting out the 1998 season with a knee injury, Scott has been on a tear since day one. The speedy, left fielder leads the nation in hits (99) and triples (11). He has set Providence College records in both categories. His seven triples in BIG EAST play are a league record. Scott has been named or shared BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors five times this season. He leads the Friars with a .425 average with 17 doubles, 11 triples, five homers and 57 rbi's as the Friars' lead off hitter.
BOUNCING BACK...PC started the BIG EAST schedule with a 1-5 record. Since then the Friars are 14-3 in league play.
RUNS...The Friars have scored ten or more runs in a game 22 times this season and have scored 20 or more runs five times this year.
OFFENSE GALORE...On April 5, 1999 the Friars and the University of Connecticut set several BIG EAST records in PC's 25-18 win. They include:
Most Hits by one team: Providence (30)Most Hits by two teams: 50Most Runs Scored by two teams: 43Runs Scored: Mike Scott (6)Total Bases, two teams: 83, PC (53), UConn (30)At Bats: (7), Mike Scott, Paul Costello and Keith ReedRbi's in a game: Clarke Caudill, UConn (10)
MR. CONSISTENT...Several Friars are having outstanding years. One player who doesn't always get the credit he deserves is first baseman Mike O'Keefe (So., Hamden, Conn.). O'Keefe is hitting .358 with 17 doubles, four triples, 11 home runs and 59 rbi's while playing in every game this season. O'Keefe has a .979 fielding percentage as he has made eight errors in 377 chances playing first base and left field this season.
TERRIFIC TRIO...Part of the reason for the Friars success this season has been the play of their rookie standouts. Mike Scott is joined by right fielder/designated hitter Neal McCarthy and shortstop Jamie Athas (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.). McCarthy goes into PC's final weekend ranked third on the team with a .376 average. He has 18 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 52 rbi's on the year. He has also stolen seven bases in seven tries. McCarthy's 12 home runs are a Providence College rookie record. Athas stepped in at shortstop last fall and has never left. He is hitting .332 with five home runs and 39 rbi's. He leads the Friars with 15 stolen bases in 18 tries. In his first year, he has started and played in 52 games and has a .917 fielding percentage (21 errors in 253 chances). He has been a part of 39 of the Friars' 57 double plays this season.
HOME RUN HITTER...Keith Reed (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) has a chance to set several offensive marks before the season is over. He goes into the Villanova series with 36 career home runs which ties him for first on the school's homer list with Ed Walsh '88. Reed also needs two more home runs to equal the single season mark of 19 set by Bob O'Toole in 1995. His 66 rbi's also ties him for the single season record with Scott Friedholm who set the mark last season.
PITCHING MARC....Senior righthander Marc DesRoches set the Providence College single season win mark with his 9-1 win over St. John's on May 2nd. DesRoches has 11 wins on the year, breaking the mark of 10 set by Todd Incantalupo in 1995 and 1996. He is 7-0 in the BIG EAST with a league best 2.42 ERA. DesRoches currently ranks 22nd in the NCAA in ERA (2.31) and is tied for fourth in wins with (11).

SAVING GRACE....The Friars' nine saves this season are the most by the team since 1991 when that team's pitchers saved 11 games. The school record is 12 set in 1983 and 1989. Andy Scott (So., Milltown, N.J.) leads PC with three saves on the year including two in BIG EAST action. Other pitchers with saves: Todd Murray (Sr., Andover, Mass) has two while Marc DesRoches, Scott Swanjord (Sr., Fairfax, Va.), Josh Burnham and Mike Stuart (So., Canton, Mass.) have one each.
GIVE HIM THE BALL...Senior pitcher Josh Burnham needs just two-and-two-third innings to set the single season innings pitched mark at PC. The mark is currently held by Marc DesRoches with 94.2 innings pitched last season. Burnham comes into the Villanova series with 92.1 innings pitched in 13 appearances this season.
OFFENSIVE BARRAGE....The 1999 Friars have equalled their single season mark for home runs (80) which was set last season. PC has already driven in more runs (458), passing the mark of 440 set last season. The Friars have more runs (519), more hits (661) and the best average (.343) of any team ever to play at Providence College.
SENIOR DAYS....Nine Friars close out their home careers at Providence College on Saturday, May 15th versus Villanova. Graduating on Sunday, May 16th are: Josh Burnham, Chris Caprio, Angelo Ciminiello, Rob Corraro, Paul Costello, Josh Cox, Marc DesRoches, Todd Murray and Scott Swanjord. which was set last season.
