LAWRENCE, Kan. - The sixth-ranked Providence College men's cross country team scored 339 points and finished 10th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Monday, November 23 at Lawrence, Kansas. PC's eigth-ranked women's team scored 386 points and placed 14th. For the men's team it was their highest finish since 1995, and for the women it snapped a string of nine consecutive years in the top 10.
Leading the way for the men and picking up All-America honors for the second time was senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) who covered the 10,000 meter course in a time of 30:37.10 to finish 11th. He was followed by junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) who was an All-America for the first time as he finished 13th in 30:45.60.
Rounding out the top scorers for the Friars were freshman Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (63rd - 31:50.00), junior Larry Morrissey of Waterford, Ireland (110th - 32:34.60) and senior Zack Ventress of Spokane, Washington (142nd - 33:04.30). Senior Rick Bush of Schenectady, New York was 157th in 33:20.50 and Ciaran Lynch (So., Limerick, Ireland) was 194th in 34:23.90.
The PC women were led by first time All-American Rachel Hixson (So., Media, Pa.) who was 13th in a time of 17:20.32 on the 5,000 meter women's course. Sarah Dupre (Sr., Kingston, Ontario) was the Friars' second best finisher coming in 29th in a time of 17:40.56. Following Dupre were: Gladys Ganiel (Sr., Harrington, Maine) in 96th with a time of 18:27.76; Heather Cappello (Fr., Lockport, N.Y.) in 120th with a time of 18:41.46 and Francine Darroch (So., Cambridge, Ontario) rounded out the scorers with a 128th finish at 18:48.40. Dana Ostrander (Jr., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) came in 175th in 19:18.74 and Stephanie O'Reilly (So., Wicklow, Ireland) was 212th overall.
"Rachel (Hixson), Ben (Noad) and Keith (Kelly) ran great races today," explained Friars' cross country coach Ray Treacy. "Sarah Dupre had an off day. We just didn't have the depth to get into the top five spots in either the men's or women's races."
