MORGANTOWN, W.Va.--The Providence College Friars made their second trip in BIG EAST baseball to Morgantown, West Virginia and again emerged without a win as the Mountaineers swept Saturday's twinbill, 12-5 and 7-4. In each game, West Virginia was able to come up with one big inning to break open tight games.
Game One saw the Friars get a two-run homer from Bryan Tamul in the first and a two-run homer from Angelo Ciminiello in the second to lead West Virginia 4-3 after two innings. Starter Marc DesRoches kept the game even at 4-4 going into the fifth inning when freshman Mike O'Keefe homered to put Providence on top, 5-4. An rbi single by WVU's Eddie Weightman tied the game at 5-5 after five innings.
With Angelo Ciminiello on in relief in the sixth, West Virginia scored seven times for the 12-5 win. Left fielder Joe McNamee's three-run homer broke the tie and gave WVU and 8-5 lead. A Friar error opened the flood gates as shortstop Jamie Hammond doubled with the bases loaded and Matt Hart (5-5 in the game) singled in the final run.
Ciminiello took the loss to fall to 1-1 while West Virginia starter, David Kloes went the distance to improve to 6-2 on the year.
Game Two saw West Virginia get its big inning in the first off freshman starter Mike Stuart. Using seven hits, the Mountaineers got and rbi single from Kevin Olkowski, a two-run single from Weightman, a one-run single from Jim Kavourias and Hammond squeezed home the fifth run for a 5-0 lead.
PC chipped away, getting one in the fourth and one in the fifth as designated hitter Jeremy Sweet drove in both runs with a double and a single. Stuart gave up a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh top Hart and Todd Murray allowed a run in the eighth. The Friars got an rbi single from Pat Carey in the eighth and Ciminiello hit his second homer of the day in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Friars fell, 7-4.
The loss dropped Stuart to 3-3 on the year while Lewis Ross pitched a complete game for WVU to improve to 4-0 on the season.
The sweep left PC with a 22-11-1 overall record and a 7-4-1 BIG EAST record. West Virginia is now 23-8-1 on the season and 5-3 in league play. The Friars again play four league games this week.
