PROVIDENCE, R.I.- Providence College baseball standout, ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) has been selected to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American Third Team for the 1998 season. The Friars' third baseman was the only District I team member selected to the national team and just one of two players from the BIG EAST Conference (the other was Rutgers' Chris Dorsett).

For Ciminiello, this is his first appearance on the national team after twice making the District I regional team. Ciminiello helped the Friars to a 31-22-1 overall record and a third place finish at the BIG EAST Tournament.

A First Team All-New England selection, Ciminiello moved from left field to play third base for the Friars this season and had a strong year while also contributing as a relief pitcher. In the classroom, Ciminiello checks in with a 3.80 grade point average in biology-science. The 6-1, 195-pound Ciminiello hopes to go to medical school following Providence College.

On the field, Ciminiello played in and started 52 games. He led the team in at-bats (218) and hits (84) while finishing third on the team with a .376 batting average. He tied for the team lead with 64 runs scored and added 18 doubles, four triples, 12 homers and 57 rbi's to his record while also stealing six bases in ten tries. He turned in a .904 fielding percentage, making 11 errors in 114 chances in his first year as a third baseman. On the mound, Ciminiello made 11 relief appearnaces with a 1-1 record and one save to go with a 4.26 ERA. He pitched in 12.2 innings and gave up just six earned runs while striking out 10 and walking seven. Teams hit just .250 off Ciminiello when he was on the mound.

Ciminiello and his Friars just finished third in the annual BIG EAST Tournament in Norwich, Connecticut. Providence was seeded fourth and after losing to #3 St. John's in the opener (7-2) rallied with wins against #1 Rutgers (3-2) and #5 West Virginia (10-1) before losing in the championship round to #2 Notre Dame (9-7).

Ciminiello is the first PC baseball player to make the GTE/CoSida Academic All-American team since Mike Lyons made it as a Second Team selection in 1994.
