NORWICH, Conn. - Providence College senior SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Walpole, Mass.) was selected to the 1998 BIG EAST Baseball First Team for the second time in his career at the BIG EAST Baseball Banquet held in Norwich, Connecticut on Tuesday night. Friar first baseman, MIKE O'KEEFE (Fr., Hamden, Conn.) was also selected to the league's All-Rookie Team.
For Friedholm, an All-New England and All-American candidate, the first team honors cap a very successful senior year. The 6-2, 220-pound catcher has led the Friars all season in virtually every offensive category. He goes into the BIG EAST Tournament with a .404 average, 13 home runs and a single season school record 64 rbi's. He leads the Friars with 20 doubles and is second with 16 stolen bases. In BIG EAST play, Friedholm hit .370 with five homers and 27 rbi's to rank among the league leaders in those categories.
Where Friedholm really shines is in the field. So far this season, the three-year starter has thrown out 24 of 60 runners trying to steal on him for a 40.0% success rate. In his career, he's thrown out 41.6% (79 of 190). This season, he's made just two throwing errors behind the plate.
The Friars co-captian leads PC (29-20-1/14-8-1) against the St. John's Red Storm (27-15-1/14-7) at 7:00 p.m. tonight at Thomas J. Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. He goes into the BIG EAST Tournament with a personal career high 17-game hitting streak. The BIG EAST Tournament is a double elimination tournament with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman first baseman MIKE O'KEEFE capped a highly successful first season at Providence by being named to the league's All-Rookie Team. For the year, he hit .337 with seven homers and 34 rbi's. He also stole 11 bases while being PC's clean up hitter most of the year. He was selected as BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 16. In BIG EAST games, the big first baseman hit .247 with four homers and 15 rbi's.
