FRIARS LAST WEEK...Providence was 3-2 on the week, 2-2 in BIG EAST action. On Monay, April 6, the Friars defeated the University of Rhode Island, 17-10. On Thursday, the Friars defeated the elements, and Pittsburgh - winning 7-6 in the first game and 10-3 in a game called after seven innings due to darkness and rain. The first game was delayed an hour and 15 minutes due to rain. On Saturday, the Friars travelled to Morgantown, West Virginia for a pair of games with the Mountaineers. In each game, WVU came up with a big inning to sweep the Friars. In game one it was a seven-run sixth that broke a 5-5 tie to give WVU a 12-5 victory. In game two, West Virginia scored five in the first on the way to a 7-4 win and a doubleheader sweep.
FRIARS VERSUS OPPONENTS...The Friars have faced Rhode Island once this season, taking a 17-10 win at Hendricken Field on April 6th. PC is 73-48 all-time against the Rams. PC and Boston College tied, 17-17, on April 1st in a game called due to darkness after seven innings. The Friars trail in this all-time series, 79-89-2. On Thursday, PC travels to Fairfield. The Friars are 17-13 all-time against the Stags. The Friars close out the week with three against Georgetown in BIG EAST play. PC is 22-11 all-time against the Hoyas.
HEAD COACH CHARLIE HICKEY...Is in his second season as the head coach of the Providence College baseball team. Hickey is 48-34-1 (.584, including this season) after going 26-23 a year ago. The Friars were 10-15 in the BIG EAST's American Division, good for fourth place. Hickey served as an assistant at Providence for five years to Paul Kostacopoulos who moved on to Maine prior to last season. During his five seasons, the Friars went to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (1992, 1995), won a BIG EAST Tournament (1992) and won a BIG EAST regular season title (1995). Eight players from those teams were drafted by Major League baseball teams.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASEBALL...All-time record: 75 seasons - 1075-831-13 (.564)....
FRIEDHOLM FACTS...With two doubles at West Virginia on Saturday, SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Walpole, Mass.) moved into second place on the Friars' all-time doubles list with 54. He needs just three doubles to pass T.J. Delvecchio for the all-time doubles lead. Friedholm already has career highs in homers (10), stolen bases (12) and average (.415). He needs just two more rbi's to equal his career best (52 in 1996). If the season ended today, Friedholm would be tied for first with an all-time average of .375 with Don Mezzanotte and Ed Walsh. On the field, Friedholm has thrown out 41.2% (14 of 34) of runners trying to steal on him.
RECOVERING ARMS....PC relievers, MIKE GALLIGAN (Jr., Plainville, Mass.) and TODD MURRAY (Sr., Andover, Mass.) continue to make big strides in rehabbing arm injuries frolm last year. GALLIGAN looked like his old self at Pittsburgh last weekend, pitching 3.1 innings of relief with one hit and three strikeouts to pick up his second win of the year. In his last four outings, GALLIGAN is 2-0 in seven innings. He has given up two hits, walked one and struck out seven with an ERA of 0.00. MURRAY has made eight appearances covering 12.2 innings and is 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA. He has walked two and struck out nine in his appearances this season. GALLIGAN had "Tommy John" surgery on his elbow last April and MURRAY sat out the entire year after surgery on his right shoulder.
MORE ARMS....The Friars have used 16 pitchers this season including position players, Mike Pandolfo, Pat Carey and Angelo Ciminiello. A year ago, the Friars used just 11 pitchers the entire season.
FRIAR STREAKS...Here's a look at PC's top hitting streaks this season:
Scott Friedholm - 16 games (2/22 - 3/17) 28-58 (.483) - 6 doubles, 5 homers, 24 rbi's...
Keith Reed - 14 games (2/21 - 3/14) 24-56 (.429) - 1 double, 8 homers, 28 rbi's...

Angelo Ciminiello - 9 games (4/2 - present) 13-41 (.317) - 5 doubles, three homers, six rbi's....
TOUGH PLACE...With this past weekend's double header loss at West Virginia, the Friars fall to 1-7 in games against the Mountaineers. PC has never won at Morgantown (0-5)....
RUN...RUN...RUN...PC has scored 10 or more runs in agame 18 times this season. The Friars are 16-1-1 when scoring ten or more runs in a game. The lone loss came at Quinnipiac on April 2nd. The tie was a 17-17 tie with Boston College. The Friars 36-2 win at Massachusetts-Eastern Shore onMarch 13th gave the 1998 Friars the record for runs scored in a game and the 11 runs put on the scoreboard were also a Friars' record for runs in an inning.
DESIGNATED HITTERS...Coach Charlie Hickey gets plenty of mileage out of his designated hitter's spot in the lineup. Three players have handled this spot most of the season. In RUDY MAURITZ (Sr., Trumbull, Connecticut), COLEY O'DONNELL (So., Sudbury, Mass.) and JEREMY SWEET (So., East Freetown, Mass.) has a three-headed designated hitter that has put up some great numbers this year. The three players have combined to hit .335 (54-161), score 43 runs, have 9 doubles, 12 homers and 56 rbi's....
THE FRIARS NATIONALLY....PC's KEITH REED (So., Auburn, Mass.) ranked among the national leaders in rbi's as of April 5th. Reed had driven in 48 runs in 28 games for a 1.71 rbi/game average which ranked him fifth in the nation. As a team, the Friars ranked second in the nation in hitting with .364 overall team batting average. PC trailed #1-ranked Boston College as the Eagles were hitting a whopping .379 as of April 5th.
FIT TO BE TIED...The Friars' 17-17 tie with Boston College on April 1st was PC's first in BIG EAST play and the team's 13th all-time. The tie with Boston College will remain that way and not be continued or made up.
CYCLE TIME....PC's hard-hitting right fielder KEITH REED (So., Auburn, Mass.) is the only Friar to hit for the cycle this season. Reed did it on March 31st against Holy Cross when he was 5-6 with two singles, a double, a triple and a home run. Reed scored four times and drove in a career high six runs in the game. Prior to that, Corey Bike was the last Friar to hit for the cycle. He did it during the 1996 season against the University of Portland.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES...Last season after 12 BIG EAST games, the Friars record stood at 3-9. This year, PC is 7-4-1 in the BIG EAST, good for fifth place. The top six teams make the BIG EAST Tournament this year in Norwich, Connecticut.
GLAD HE WAITED....Friars' starter MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) slipped through the cracks the past few years as a pitcher for the Friars. In his first three seasons (he sat out the 1996 season), DesROCHES made just nine appearances, pitching just 10.2 innings with an 0-0 record and a 1.93 ERA. This season, he worked his way into the starting rotation and has made nine starts, pitched three complete games, is 5-2 with a team high 54.2 innings and leads the staff with 41 strikeouts. He has a 5.76 ERA and team's are hitting just .274 versus him.
ROOKIES MAKING THEIR MARKS....First baseman MIKE O'KEEFE (Fr., Hamden, Conn.) is one of several freshman having strong rookie seasons at Providence. O'Keefe is hitting .372 in 33 games with five homers and 28 rbi's. He's stolen nine bases and has only missed one game...On the mound, lefthander ANDREW SCOTT (Fr., Milltown, N.J.) has made seven starts and is 3-0 in 26 innings with a 2.42 ERA. Teams are hitting just .257 versus him. Another lefthander is MIKE STUART (Fr., Canton, Mass.). He is 3-3 on the year with a 7.83 ERA in 33.1 innings. He has appeared in nine games, making four starts.
