Baseball Catcher Scott Friedholm Receives Honors

Providence, R.I. - Providence College's standout catcher, SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Walpole, Mass.) has been selected First Team All-ECAC and to the American Baseball Coaches Association's First All-Northeast Region Team for his play during the 1998 season. By being named First Team ABCA All-Northeast Region, Friedholm goes on the ballot for national All-American honors which will be selected at the College World Series next week.
Friedholm was already selected First Team All-BIG EAST and First Team All-New England. He will compete in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches' All-Star Game which will be played on Monday, June 1 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut.
The 1998 season was a banner year for the Friars' catcher as helped PC to a 31-22-1 season and a third place finish at the 1998 BIG EAST Tournament. Friedholm led Providence with a .395 average and had 13 homers to go with a school record 66 runs batted in. He also tied for the team lead in runs scored with 64, was second in hits with 79, first in doubles with 21, second in homers with 13 and had a team best .715 slugging percentage. He also stole 16 bases in 18 tries. Behind the plate he threw out 27 of 65 runners trying to steal on him for a 41.5% success rate.
For his career, Friedholm's name dominates the Providence record books. He finished his PC career ranked fifth in hits (217); third in runs scored (157); first in doubles (60); tied for seventh in home runs (23); third in rbi's (155); third in career average (.372), eighth in stolen bases (28), third in slugging percentage (.611) and third in total bases (347).
Defensively, Friedholm was a standout catcher who threw out 82 of 175 runners trying to steal on him during his career for a 46.9% success rate.
Friedholm now awaits the Major League Baseball Draft which will be held on June 2nd. The Friars' catcher is expected to be one of the top players drafted from the New England area.
