Saturday, December 4, 1999 - 2:06 p.m.

FRIARS VERSUS WOLFPACK...After not playing each other for 23 years (1975-1998), Providence College and North Carolina State meet for the third time in just over a year. Today's game is the fifth meeting in the all-time series with N.C. State holding a 3-1 edge in the first four meetings. The two teams met during the regular season last November 24th in Providence with PC taking an 80-69 win. The two teams then met in the first round of the NIT in Raleigh with the Wolfpack winning that one, 92-86, on March 10th. At Providence, the Friars are 1-0. In Raleigh, the Wolfpack is 2-0. The fourth game was played at Madison Square Garden in the 1975 NIT where NC State prevailed, 74-69.

PC VERSUS ACC...Today's game is the Friars' second this season versus a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Friars lost to Virginia in the second round of the Puerto Rico Shootout, 80-64, on November 26th. In 17 meetings between Providence and ACC members, the ACC teams hold an 11-6 edge.

BU RECAP...The Friars played solid all-around game in Tuesday's 85-70 win over Boston University at the Civic Center. PC shot .556 (30-54) for the game including 10-for-20 from three-point land. Erron Maxey led the Friars with 19 points while freshman guard Abdul Mills added 17 and Donta Wade scored 11 points off the bench. PC had 24 assists in the game while making just nine turnovers on the evening.

BACK IN ACTION...Junior guard John Linehan returned to the Friars' lineup versus Boston University after being out of action since October 25th when he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. Following two more surgeries for a blood clot and an infection, PC's superpest missed the Friars' first five games. The reigning BIG EAST steals champion (3.3 per game), Linehan started versus BU, played 21 minutes and scored eight points (3-6 FG, 2-5 3PT) with two rebounds, two assists and three steals.

THE CAPTAINS...Juniors John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) and Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) will serve as the Friars' captains this season.

HOME AND AWAY....During the 1999-2000 season, the Friars turned in their first winning road record in BIG EAST play in the league's first 20 years. The Friars were 5-4 away from the Civic Center in league games.

PRESEASON RECAP...The Friars were 2-0 on the preseason defeating the Upstate New York All-Stars on November 4th by an 88-86 score. At the Puerto Rico Shootout former PC coaches Pete Gillen (Virginia) and Rick Barnes (Texas) had their teams in action. Former assistants Tom Herrion and Alexis Sherard are also at Virginia. This week, PC faces North Carolina and Head Coach Herb Sendek. Sendek was a PC assistant under Rick Pitino, Gordie Chiesa and Rick Barnes.

FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS...The loss to Holy Cross in Saturday's home opener gives PC a 63-10 record in season opening games in the school's 73-year basketball history. The loss was also the Friars' first home opening loss sicne November 29, 1984 when PC lost to Assumption, 70-67. That broke a streak of 14 consecutive home opening wins. The Friars are now 49-5 in opening games at home and 14-5 in road openers. PC lost its opening game last year to Vanderbilt, but the game was part of the CoSIDA Classic and the Civic Center was considered a neutral court.

HIGHS AND LOWS...The 43 points scored by the Friars in the 54-43 loss to Holy Cross (11/20/99) is the fewest points the Friars have scored in a game since December 27, 1982 when they lost by an identical 54-43 score to the University of Hawaii in the Rainbow Classic. Just one week later, the Friars set the school's single game scoring mark with 120 points versus American University - Puerto Rico.

FOR THE RECORDS...The Friars' 120-point outburst against American University of Puerto Rico sets the single game mark for points in a game. The previous mark was 118 and was set on January 20th, 1973 in a 118-88 win over Western Kentucky. PC's 50 field goals versus American also set a school mark. The previous best of 48 was done four times with the last one coming on December 18, 1976 versus Brown University.

SCORING STRUGGLES...Through the first four games this season, the Friars averaged 59.5 points per game. In the last two wins, the Friars have scored 205 for a 102.5 per game average. The Friars are now averaging 73.8 points a game after six contests. Last season, the Friars averaged 76.1 points per game.

FINDING THE HANDLE...The Friars have struggled through the first five games of the season in protecting the basketball. The young Friars have turned the ball over 113 times for an average of 22.6 times a game. Versus American-Puerto Rico, the Friars had a season low 19 turnovers. Fortunately for Providence, the Friars defense has forced opponents into 122 turnovers (24.4 per game) through the first five contests this year.

FRIARS FOR THREE...The Friars hit on a season high 11 three-pointers in the victory over American-Puerto Rico. Then followed that with a 10-for-20 performance versus Boston University. Add to that seven against Virginia and in the last three games, Providence has made 28 threes. For the year, PC has made 36 of 113 threes (.319). In the last three games, the Friars have hit on 28 of 68 three-pointers for a .412 percentage.

FINDING THE RANGE...Three of the Friars newest players recorded career highs in the win over American University. Freshman guard Abdul Mills scored 20 points while junior guard Donta Wade added 19 on 7-of-11 from the floor and 5-for-7 behind the three-point arc. Freshman forward Romuald Augustin scored a season high 15 points, getting 13 of those in the first half.

WADE-ING INTO THE ACTION...Junior guard Donta Wade got off to a slow start for the Friars scoring just nine points in PC's first four games.
