FRIARS VERSUS BEARS...The two teams meet for the 108th time tonight in what is Providence College's second oldest rivalry (only Rhode Island is longer - 109 meetings). The two teams started playing in 1921 and the Friars hold an 83-24 edge in the 108 games played. PC is 40-10 versus Brown in home games, 41-14 on the road and 2-0 on neutral courts. The Friars have won seven in a row and 17 of the last 18 meetings dating back to January 9, 1980. Brown's last win in the series came on December 1, 1991 when the Bears won in overtime, 71-69. The Friars won last year's meeting 81-60.
LAST GAME...The Friars dropped their home opener to Holy Cross, 54-43. Abdul Mills led the Friars with 13 points in the game. PC shot just .269 from the floor and made 26 turnovers on the night. The game was the first meeting between the two schools since 1992.
ON THE SIDELINES...John Linehan, the Friars' junior point guard and the reigning BIG EAST steals champion (3.3 per game) is out of the lineup due to surgery to repair a groin injury on October 25th. He is expected to miss two-to-four weeks.
FRIARS IN SEASON OPENERS...The loss to Holy Cross in Saturday's home opener gives PC a 63-10 record in season opening games in the school's 73-year basketball history. The loss was also the Friars' first home opening loss sicne November 29, 1984 when PC lost to Assumption, 70-67. That broke a streak of 14 consecutive home opening wins. The Friars are now 49-5 in opening games at home and 14-5 in road openers. PC lost its opening game last year to Vanderbilt, but the game was part of the CoSIDA Classic and the Civic Center was considered a neutral court.
THE CAPTAINS...Juniors John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) and Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) will serve as the Friars' captains this season.
BUSY WEEK...Tonight's game is the second of the Friars' current string of five games in eight days and six in ten. The string started on Saturday against Holy Cross and following tonight's contest with Brown, the Friars fly to Bayamon, Puerto Rico where they will participate in the Puerto Rico Shootout. On Thanksgiving Day, the Friars face #2-ranked Michigan State in a game televised on ESPN2 at 11:00 a.m. On Friday, PC faces either South Carolina or Virginia and then plays in the final round on Saturday. The Friars then return home to face Boston University on Tuesday, November 30th.
BACK IN THE SADDLE....PC radio play-by-play man John Rooke returns to the airwaves tonight after missing just his second Friars' game in this his 11th season calling the shots for PC basketball. He missed Saturday's game as he was doing the Boston College-Notre Dame football game.
