PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Ryan Serravalle scored nine of his game-high 14 points in the last seven minutes to lead Holy Cross past Providence 54-43 Saturday in the season opener for both teams.
It was the Friars' lowest point total since 1984, when they lost to Georgetown 59-38.
The Crusaders, who held a 23-21 halftime advantage, trailed 38-31 with 9:13 left in the second half before going on a 23-5 run over the next nine minutes.
Serravalle's 3-pointer with 7 minutes left gave the Crusaders the lead at 41-38, and they never lost it. Serravalle made six straight free throws in the last two minutes to help seal the victory.
The Friars, who shot 27 percent for the game, scored just one field goal in the last six minutes. Holy Cross shot 33 percent for the game.
Holy Cross used a significant height advantage in the frontcourt to outrebound Providence, 46-40.
Crusader center Josh Sankes, a 7-foot-1 transfer from Rutgers, scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Abdul Mills had 13 points for the Crusaders. David Murray led Providence with nine rebounds.
The teams combined for 51 turnovers in the game.
The win marked the debut of Holy Cross coach Ralph Willard, a former coach at Pittsburgh.
