Melissa Scungio was named the Head Coach of the Providence College Cheerleading team in August of 2016. She came to Providence College after spending six seasons as the Head Cheerleading Coach and Assistant Spirit Coordinator at the University of Rhode Island.

Scungio strives to build a culture of hard working, disciplined, respectful, and competitive athletes here at Providence. She believes that by building positive relationships and challenging the team both physically and mentally, the program will develop into a strong cheerleading team. But most importantly, it will result in producing great people who are prepared to succeed in this world.

Prior to coming to Providence, Scungio built a strong game day and competitive program at URI. During the 2011-12 and 2012-13 season, the team competed locally and won first place both years at the Reggie Lewis Cheerleading Competition. The 2013-2014 squad was the school’s first team to compete at UCA College Nationals as an All Girl team. The team moved on to finals and placed 5th in Division 1. 2014-15 and 2015-16 were successful seasons as well, as both teams again moved on to finals and placed 5th and 7th in their division.

Melissa is a Head Instructor for the Universal Cheerleaders Association (2006-present). UCA is the largest cheerleading organization in the World. Since its founding in 1974, the company has been the driving force in making cheerleading the dynamic, athletic, high profile activity it is today. She runs camps and clinics for high school and college level cheerleaders, and coaches clinics as well. She judges local, regional, and national cheerleading championships and is a choreographer for many teams in the Northeast region.

As a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, she earned her B.S. in Kinesiology and is currently a Physical Education and Health teacher in the Fall River Public School System. During her stay at URI, she was a two time captain for the cheerleading team. Scungio graduated from North Kingstown High School, where she earned a state cheerleading championship title with her 2004 team. She currently resides in Providence, R.I.
