Doug Smith begins his second season in Friartown in 2026-27. The 2025-26 season marked the inaugural campaign for women's golf at Providence College. The Friars' top finish came at the Stonehill Senior Showdown in April 2026 at D.W. Field Golf Course in Brockton, Mass., where Providence placed third overall with a team score of 304 (+24). Gwendolyn Yarnall tied for third individually with a score of 71 (+1), while freshman Myla Bisceglia (Rye, N.Y.) finished fifth with a 73 (+3). The result marked career-best finishes for both Yarnall and Bisceglia. The third-place finish also was the highest team finish of the season. In the program's first-ever BIG EAST Championship at Callawassie Island Club in Okatie, S.C., the Friars finished seventh overall. Yarnall led Providence with a 25th-place finish, carding a three-round score of 235 (+19).

Smith arrived in Providence with four years of head coaching experience. Most recently, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s golf teams at NCAA Division III Manhattanville University. Under his guidance, the men’s team earned consecutive runner-up finishes at the Skyline Conference Championships. He also mentored and developed a Conference Rookie of the Year and Athlete of the Year.

Before moving into collegiate coaching, Smith began his career as the varsity boys' golf coach at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, N.Y. and at T.G.A. Premier Golf as a head coach at the youth level. In addition to his coaching experience, Smith has owned and operated Golf Design Unlimited LLC in Eastchester, N.Y., for the past 25 years, specializing in the design and consulting of golf courses, practice facilities and other related infrastructure. Over his career, he has contributed to more than 200 design and renovation projects, including 20 new golf course designs and 20 driving range construction projects. Smith brings experience as a rules official for the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) and is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) since 2009.

Smith, a 1988 graduate of Providence College, earned his bachelor's degree in history. He later attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he completed a second and third bachelor's degree in landscape architecture and fine arts.

Smith has four children. His oldest, Cameron, is a junior at St. Lawrence University and a goaltender on the men’s hockey team. Smith has twin girls, Tatum and Georgie, who attend Providence College and his youngest daughter, Sutton, is in high school.
