PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Senior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario)... ran at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13. Dupre finished second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:07.5 and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Sophomore Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, CA) ..scored 16 points (5-11fg) in her team's 82-77 victory over Seton Hall. In the 64-61 loss to Georgetown, Roberts led the team with 20 points on 7-14 shooting while also pulling down seven boards. For the week, Roberts shot 48% from the floor while averaging 18 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
Senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.)... tallied two goals, including the game winner, and added one assist in PC's 6-3 HOCKEY EAST win against the BU Terriers on Feb. 13 at Schneider Arena. He also notched one assist in PC's 6-3 win against Army on Feb. 14
Senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England)... won the 3,000 meters at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13 in a time of 8:11.67 and qualified for NCAA Indoor Track Championship.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... PC competed at the New England Championship at the University of Rhode Island on Feb. 12-13. Sophomore Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. was the Friars' top finisher. Hixson won the mile in a time of 4:54.40 and earned All-New England honors. Also at the New England Championship, senior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine placed fifth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:08.48. Senior Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario ran at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13. Dupre finished second in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:07.5 and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL...(4-19, 3-12 BIG EAST)...The Friars, 4-19 overall and 3-12 in the BIG EAST, broke a seven game winless streak as they defeated Seton Hall last Sunday, 82-77. Providence shot 46% (26-57 fg) from the floor and a season high 90% (26-29) from the free-throw line as they won their first game since January 17. The Friars were led by junior Meghan Hinds who tallied 21 points including a 13 of 13 mark at the free throw line. Sophomore Monika Roberts tallied 16 points while Jen Gombotz added her first double double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards. The Friars have been led all season by Roberts who has tallied 11.9 ppg and a team high 5.7 rpg. Providence takes to the road and faces #6 Connecticut on Wednesday, February 17 in Storrs, CT. The Friars return home for their final two games of the season hosting Pittsburgh on Saturday, February 20 and St. John's on Wednesday, February 23.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (14-10, 7-7)...The Friars played once on the week dropping a 69-65 decision to #16-ranked Miami. The Friars trailed 41-37 at the half in this one and then went scoreless in the first five minutes of the second half as the Hurricanes built a 51-47 lead. From there, PC went on a 16-0 run of its own to take a 53-51 lead with just over nine minutes left in the game. Johnny Hemsley and Tim James did most of the damage as James' jumper with 6:04 left put Miami ahead to stay for good. JUSTIN FARLEY (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left to cut the lead to 67-65, but James hit a pair of free throws to ice the game with four seconds left. Farley had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. JAMAAL CAMAH (So., Salem, Mass.) was 5-5 from the floor for 11 points and LEON BRISPORT (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) had his best game as a Friar with 10 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes. JAMEL THOMAS (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) was held to just 16 points to lead the Friars. The Friars' All-America and All-BIG EAST candidate moved past Joey Hassett (1,828) and Marvin Barnes (1,839) into third on PC's all-time scoring list with 1,841 career points. Only Eric Murdock (2,021) and Jimmy Walker (2,045) remain ahead of Thomas on the scoring list.
The Friars travel to St. John's on Monday night for a 7:30 game against the 8th-ranked Red Storm. That game will be seen on ESPN2. On Saturday, February 20th, PC travels to Villanova for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Friars and Wildcats will be seen live on ESPN.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The Friars competed at the Valentine Invitational on Feb. 13. Junior Larry Morrissey of Waterford, Ireland and senior Rick Bush of Clifton Park, N.Y. ran the mile for PC. Morrissey finished fourth in a time of 4:03.51 and Bush placed sixth in a time of 4:05.37. Morrissey qualified for the NCAA Indoor Indoor Track Championship on March 5-6 in Indianapolis, Ind. Senior Ben Noad of Bristol, England won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:11.67 to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship.
MEN'S (5-5) AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (6-5)...Both squads fell to Boston College on Saturday in the last regular season meet for 1998-99. The women lost, 211-99 and were led by freshman Lee Barnum (Hyde Park, NY) who captured the 200 IM. The men lost, 173-112 and were led by seniors Jed Michnowicz (Santa Clara, CA) and Sean Connel (Roseland, NJ). Michnowicz won the 1,000 free and captured the 500 and 200 free with meet records. Connell won the 100 and 200 back. The Friars are idle until the BIG EAST Championship, February 24-27. This year's contest will take place for the first time at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in Uniondale, N.Y.
MEN'S HOCKEY (16-13, 10-9)... PC posted a 2-0 mark on Feb. 12-13 with wins against Army and Boston University. The Friars improved their non-conference record to 6-4 on Feb. 12 with a 6-2 win against Army at PC's Schneider Arena. Sophomore Adam Lee (Brampton, Ontario) and junior Nick Lent (Westwood, Mass.) led the offense with one goal and two assists each. PC's other goals were scored by sophomore Cole Gendreau (Bismarck, N.D.), junior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario), senior Jon Coe (Anoka, Minn.) and junior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta). Senior Mark Kane (St. Albert, Alberta) made 17 saves in net to earn the win. The following night, PC earned a season sweep against BU with a 6-3 win at Schneider Arena. Senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) and Sheppard each tallied two goals for the Friars. Lent and senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) also added one goal each. Sophomore netminder Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 25 stops in the victory.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (16-8-2, 13-7-2)... PC posted a 0-3 mark last week. On Feb. 10, Brown defeated the Friars, 4-1, to capture the Mayor's Cup at Meehan Auditorium. Sophomore Jess Tabb (Springfield, Mass.) tallied the lone goal for the Friars. Sophomore Sara DeCosta registered 36 saves for the Friars. On Feb. 13, Northeastern defeated the Friars, 1-0, in Boston, Mass. DeCosta made 27 stops in net for the Friars. The following afternoon, the Friars were defeated by top-ranked Harvard, 5-2, in Cambridge, Mass. Freshman Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and senior Myia Yates (St. Paul, Minn.) both scored for PC. DeCosta recorded 32 stops in the loss.
