WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The fourth-ranked Providence College women's cross country team captured the New England Championship on Friday, Oct. 16 at Franklin Park in Boston Mass. The women's team scored 21 points and won its third consecutive and eighth overall New England crown. The women were led by senior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario), who finished first in a time of 16:58. Also scoring for the Friars were junior Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. (third - 17:09), sophomore Stephanie O'Reilly of Wicklow, Ireland (fourth - 17:38), senior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (fifth - 17:40) and freshman Heather Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (eighth - 17:54). The women's team returns to action on Oct. 30 at the BIG EAST Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
VOLLEYBALL (11-11, 1-4)... . The Friars were 1-1 last week. PC defeated the University of Rhode Island for the first time since 1994 in five games, 3-2. Sophomore Heidi Filippi (Wooster, OH) recorded a team best 23 kills for the victors. Rookie Annie Cella (Burr Ridge, IL) tallied 15 kills and 13 digs. The Friars fell to Connecticut, 0-3 on Monday, October 19 in Storrs, CT. Freshman Sarah Katinger is ranked 14th in the nation in digs (4.19) while Providence is ranked 16th as a team (19.25).
FIELD HOCKEY (3-12, 2-2)... The Friars were winless last week in non-conference action. Junior goalie Andrea Weyl (Ridgefield, CT) made 15 saves in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to Massachusetts. In a 6-3 loss to Harvard, junior Erica Hebert (Enfield, CT) scored twice and assisted on the third Friar goal. Hebert leads the team in points (23), accounting for 56% of the team's offense. The Friars host Boston University on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the last home game of the season.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-12-0, 2-8-0)... The Friars saw their flickering tournament hopes go down the drain as they lost to BIG EAST games on the road at Rutgers (2-1) and at Villanova (3-0). The Friars started the week in eighth place, the final playoff spot. The two losses moved both Villanova and Rutgers into playoff spots as PC fell to 11th overall. At Rutgers, PATRICIA MOORE (Sr., Melville, N.Y.0) scored PC's lone goal to tie the game at 1-1. She leads the Friars in scoring with six goals on the season for 12 points. SHAYNA ROSS (Jr., Whitman, Mass.) made 12 saves versus Rutgers and seven in the loss to Villanova. The Friars travel to Brown for a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, October 21st for their only action of the week.
WOMEN'S TENNIS (9-2)... Did not compete.
MEN'S TENNIS (0-1)... The Friars competed at the UConn Invitational on Oct. 16-18. Senior Jamie Williams posted a 4-0 mark and captured the A Flight. Sophomore Paco Fabian (Norwalk, Conn) registered a 4-0 mark and won the B Flight. Williams and freshman Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.) recorded a 4-0 mark to win the A Doubles Flight. The Friars return to action on Nov. 6-8 at the Rolex Championships in Philadelphia, Pa.

MEN'S SOCCER (5-8, 3-4)... The Friars posted a 1-1 mark last week. On Oct. 16, 19th-ranked Rutgers defeated the Friars, 2-1, at PC. Sophomore Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.) tallied the lone goal for the Friars. Senior goalkeeper Dan Pires (Ludlow, Mass.) made six stops in the loss. On Oct. 18, the Friars earned their third BIG EAST win of the season as they defeated Villanova, 4-2, at Glay Field. Junior Andy McConville (Madison, Conn.) led the Friar offense with two goals. Junior Michael Eisenhut (Hanover, Mass.) and Jones also scored for PC. Pires recorded five stops in the win.
MEN'S GOLF...The Providence College golf team battled terrible weather conditions along with some of the top teams in the country as the Friars finished 18th of 18 teams at the Adams Cup Tournament. The Friars shot a 36-hole total of 329-320-649 to finish 62 strokes behind tournament champion, Purdue who won by 13 strokes with a 300-287-587. Providence College was led by sophomores DEAN CASHMAN (Etna, N.H.) and CHRIS HYNES (Warwick, R.I.) who tied for 57th with 36-hole scores of 82-78-160. Sophomore JUSTIN MONAHAN (Winchester, Mass.) tied for 76th with an 81-83-164. Seniors ROB BRENNAN (Springfield, Mass.) and Richard Dichard (Nashua, N.H.) tied for 87th. Brennan shot an 84-85-169 while Dichard shot an 88-81-169.
MEN'S HOCKEY (0-0)... PC defeated Toronto, 8-0, in an exhibition game on Saturday, October 17 at Schneider Arena. Seven different PC players scored in the contest, including senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) who netted two goals. PC's other goals were netted by senior right wing Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia), junior center Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.), junior defenseman Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.), sophomore defenseman Mike Farrell (Carmel, Ind.), junior right wing Nick Lent (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman center Marc Suderman (Regina, Saskatchewan). Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatcewan) and senior netminder Mark Kane (St. Albert, Alberta) combined to register seven stops in the win. The team will begin its regular-season schedule against CCHA foe Miami University on October 23 at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena. The following night, PC will host Lake Superior State at 7:00 p.m.
