For Immediate Release: August 2, 2001
Providence, RI -- Providence College has announced the formation of a ten-member search committee charged with recommending qualified finalists for the College's next athletic director. The search committee will begin its work within the next week, with a goal to have a new athletic director hired on or before January 1, 2002.
The search committee consists of internal representatives from among faculty and administrative staff, as well as external members with long-held ties to the College. David Duffy, chairman of Duffy and Shanley, a Providence-based communications consulting firm and current chair of the Providence College President's Council, will chair the search committee.
Other appointees to the search committee include: * Kathleen Alvino, executive director of human resources at Providence College * Brian Bartolini, director of the College's Office of Academic Services * Ann Galligan-Kelley, assistant professor of accountancy and a member of the College's Athletic Advisory Council * Jill LaPoint, associate director of athletics and senior women's administrator at the College * Edward Laprey, director of intramural sports at the College * Rev. Robert Morris, O.P., the faculty representative to the athletic department and former vice president for development at the College and assistant to the Dominican provincial of the Province of St. Joseph * Steve Muzrall, a member of the Providence College class of 2002 and president of the 52nd Student Congress * Dr. Kenneth Walker, a 1957 graduate of Providence College, with experience that includes service as a Division I basketball official and as chairman of the state parole board. * Jacqueline White, assistant vice president for finance and business at the College
Duffy, who served as the first public relations and marketing counsel to the Big East conference during its formation and assisted with initial television syndication, maintains an ongoing relationship with the Big East conference. He has also provided general consulting to athletic departments at Georgetown, Xavier, University of Connecticut, and the University of South Florida, and was the founding chair of the Rhode Island Sports Council and co-founder of the Providence College Front Court Club. A 1961 graduate of Providence College, Duffy recently completed a three-year term as chairman of the national board of directors of the National Conference for Community and Justice.
Maurice Paradis, former Rhode Island director of business regulation and former president of an executive search firm, will provide consulting assistance to the search committee in identifying a pool of qualified candidates. Paradis, a 1958 alumnus of the College, is currently associated with Executive Resources, Inc., a division of Spherion Corporation, an international human resources/capital management organization headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Paradis previously served as an adjunct faculty member at Providence College and is also a member of the President's Council.
In announcing his appointments to the committee, Providence College President Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P. noted, "The task at hand is to identify an experienced and highly skilled athletic administrator who has a keen understanding of what it takes to oversee a successful Division I non-football athletic program. This essential position in the college's administration also requires us to recruit candidates who will represent Providence College with utmost integrity, and who will support the mission of the College." He added, "I believe this assignment is in very capable hands."
The athletic director is responsible for the overall direction and management of Providence College's Division I NCAA intercollegiate athletics and recreational programs for over 300 student-athletes in 21 varsity sports. An interim leadership plan for the athletic department is being developed and will be in place shortly.
