Providence College Athletes of the Week
Keith Kelly (Jr., Drogheda, Ireland)... Kelly led the Friars with a first-place finish (30:05.47) in the 10,000 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship on May 1-2. Kelly also placed fourth (14:27.14) in the 5,000 meters.
Matt Pymm (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.)... Recorded two goals and eight assists in the lacrosse team's two wins last week. Pymm's 10 points enabled him to establish the PC all-time scoring mark (184 points) and the all-time assist mark (102).

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The women's track team placed 12th at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship on May 1-2 in Villanova, Pa. The team scored 21 points and finished in 12th place. PC was led by three-time All-American Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario), who placed third in the 5,000 meters (16:37.24) and fifth in the 3,000 meters (9:35.80). PC junior Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) finished third in the 10,000 meters in a time of 35:30.27. Also in the 10,000, senior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) placed fifth (36:20.16).
SOFTBALL (12-39, 3-13)...The Friars closed out the 1999 season by losing their last six games. PC finished the year at 12-39 overall and tied for eighth in the BIG EAST with a 3-13 record. On Wednesday, April 28th, the Friars dropped a pair of one-run losses at the University of Rhode Island, 3-2 and 2-1. On Saturday at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights took two games, 13-5 and 10-2. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. On Sunday, PC closed out the season at Villanova with 4-1 and 5-0 losses. The Friars were led on the season by KERRI JACKLETS (So., Sayville, N.Y.) who hit .277 with 13 doubles, one home run and 11 rbi's. JAMI SERVIDONE (Jr., Rensselear, N.Y.) followed with a .276 average and led the team with five homers and 21 rbi's. On the mound, ROBYN WEST (So., Gansevoort, N.Y.) was 7-17 with a 3.32 ERA in 135 innings. HEATHER NATHAN (Jr., So. Hempstead, N.Y.) was 4-20 with a 3.26 ERA in 124-and 2/3 innings.
BASEBALL (40-13/15-8)...The Friars clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with their three-game sweep of the St. John's Red Storm and also reached the 40-win plateau for the second time in school history. With three BIG EAST games remaining, the Friars are now 40-13 overall and 15-8 in the BIG EAST, good for third place, two games behind second place Rutgers. As they have been all season, the Friars are ranked #1 in New England among the Division I schools. Versus St. John's, the Friars swept Sunday's doubleheader by 9-1 and 12-9 scores. In game one, MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) pitched a five-hitter, striking out seven and giving up just five hits to improve his record to 11-1 on the year. The 11 wins sets a new Providence College single season record. DesRoches was also named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for his exploits. KEITH REED (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) and NEAL McCARTHY (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) led the Friars with three hits each. McCarthy drove in two runs as did JAMIE ATHAS (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.) who hit his fifth homer of the year. Game Two saw MIKE SCOTT (So., Darien, Conn.) get three hits and MIKE O'KEEFE (So., Hamden, Conn.) drove in three runs to lead the attack. ROB CORRARO (Sr., Madison, Conn.) pitched seven-and-2/3 innings to get the win. ANDY SCOTT (So., Milltown, N.J.) shutdown a late St. John's rally to pick up his third save of the year. In the final game of the series, PC fell behind 5-0 in the top of the first and then came back for an 11-7 win. Senior righthander JOSH BURNHAM (Tolland, Conn.) went the distance to improve to 8-2 on the season. After giving up six runs in the first three innings, Burnham shutdown the Red Storm by giving up just two hits in the final six innings. Offensively, ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) led the Friars with a 3-for-3 game including his 12th home run of the year and three rbi's. McCarthy had a pair of hits and three rbi's while Mike Scott delivered two hits, two rbi's and his fifth home run of the season. McCarthy was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week as he was 6-11 (.545) in the series with a homer and eight rbi's.
The Friars are next in action on Friday and Saturday, May 14-15 when they close out the regular season and play the final home game ever at Hendricken Field agains Villanova. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday at 12 noon and a single game follows on Saturday with a 12 noon starting time.
MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The men's track team finished in 11th place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship on May 1-2 in Villanova, Pa. The men's team scored 34 points and finished in 11th place. Junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) led the Friars with a first-place finish (30:05.47) in the 10,000 meters. It marked the first time a Friar captured the 10,000 at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship since Paul Logan won it 1992. Senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) also turned in a strong performance for PC, finishing second in the 5,000 meters (14:19.05). Noad was followed in the 5,000 by Kelly (fourth, 14:27.14) and freshman Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (fifth, 14:36.60). Junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) also scored for the Friars, placing fourth in the 1,500 meters (3:53.14).
LACROSSE (5-10, 2-6) ... The Friars closed out their season with a 2-0 mark last week. On April 28, PC defeated Boston College, 16-10, at Glay Field. Junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) led the PC offense with four goals. Senior Matt Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y.) notched one goal and six assists in the win. Pymm's six assists gave him 100 for his career and broke the PC all-time mark of 97. Senior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) made 26 saves in the win. On May 1, the Friars earned the fourth consecutive win with a 9-5 victory against Hartford at Glay Field. Sophomore Jack Cullinane (Southport, Conn.) netted three goals for the Friars. Pymm tallied one goal and two assists in the contest to become PC's all-time leading scorer with 184 points (82 goals, 102 assists). Chambers registered 15 stops for PC.
GOLF (1-1)...The Providence College golf team closed out the 1999 spring golf schedule by finishing sixth at the New England District I Championships held at the Sterling Country Club in Sterling, Massachusetts.
The University of Rhode Island won the two-day event on the par-71, 6,666 yard course with a total of 596, just 28 over par. The tourney's individual winner, URI's Justin Thompson eagled the final hole to give the Rams a one-stroke win over the University of Connecticut (597). Yale was third (609), followed by Central Connecticut (611), Hartford (615) and Providence College (618).
The Friars were led by Ben Bridgeo (So., Southbride, Mass.) and Chris Hynes (So., Warwick, R.I.) who tied for 14th. Bridgeo shot a 79-73-152 while Hynes shot 75-77-152. Both were ten strokes over par and six behind Thompson who shot a 146 and won a tiebreaker with Yale's Eddie Brockner.
Following Bridgeo and Hynes was senior Rich Dichard (Nashua, N.H.) who tied for 38th with an 81-77-158. Justin Monahan (So., Worcester, Mass.) and Rob Brennan (Sr., Springfield, Mass.) were one shot behind Dichard and tied for 41st. Monahan shot an 80-79-159 and Brennan closed out his career with a 78-81-159.
