SARAH DUPRE (Sr., Kingston, Ontario)... finished fourth in the 5,000 meters (16:07.34) at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship at Indianapolis, Ind. on March 5. With her fourth-place finish, Dupre earned her third All-America accolade.

KEITH REED (Jr., Auburn, Mass.)...The Friars' rightfielder was selected BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week as he helped the baseball team to a 6-2 spring trip by going 19-for-38 (.500) with three doubles, six homers and 20 rbi's on the week. Reed had two homers and a career high six rbi's in PC's 17-1 win over Northwood. He had five other games with three or more rbi's on the week.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... Senior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters (16:07.34) at the NCAA Indoor Track Championship on March 5 at Indianapolis, Ind. For her effort, Dupre earned her third All-America honor.

LACROSSE... The lacrosse team posted a 0-1 mark last week. The Friars were defeated, 8-7, in their MAAC opener against Mount St. Mary's in Baltimore, Md. March 3. Junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) led the Friars' offense with four goals. Senior Craig Schwalb (Bayville, N.Y.), sophomore Jim Dooley (Maplewood, N.J.) and senior Matt Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y) also scored for PC. Senior Robb Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Brian McCarthy (Townsend, Mass.) combined to make 21 saves in goal.

MEN'S BASKETBALL... The Friars faced Georgetown for the second time in five days dropping a 68-66 decision to the Hoyas in the first round. Erron Maxey (So., Lake Elsinore, Cal.) led the Friars with 18 points and five rebounds while Jamel Thomas (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 17 points in the heart breaking loss. PC had the ball with 12 seconds left but Maxey's short jumper rolled off the rim as time ran out. Georgetown outrebounded the Friars by a 57-32 margin. John Linehan (So., Chester, Pa.) equalled a BIG EAST Tournament record with seven steals in the game. Prior to the start of the tournament, Thomas was named First Team All-BIG EAST, the eighth Friar player to take that honor. Providence now moves on to the NIT where the Friars will face North Carolina State in Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, March 10th at 7:30 p.m.

BASEBALL...The Friars were 5-1 on the week with wins over the University of Dayton (7-6), St. Bonaventure (20-2 and 15-3), Bucknell (5-4) and Wagner College (14-2). PC's lone loss came to 18th-ranked Florida International by a 7-6 score in ten innings. Keith Reed (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) was 19-for-38 (.500) with three doubles, six homers and 20 rbi's in the Friars on PC's eight game trip. He had six games games with three or more rbi's on the week. Marc DesRoches (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) was 2-1 on the trip with 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings and a 1.76 ERA. Mike Scott (Fr., Darien, Conn.) was 16-39 (.436)on the trip with 13 runs scored, four doubles and six rbi's. The Friars open the home schedule on Wednesday against Central Connecticut at 2:30 p.m.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK...The Friars competed at the IC4A Track Championship on March 6-7. Junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) was PC's top performer, finishing third in the mile in a time of 4:09.32. Senior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also ran a strong race, placing fourth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:17.14.

SOFTBALL...The 1999 softball team opened the 1999 season by competing at the Rebel Games in Ocoee, Florida last week. The Friars finished 2-9 overall which included wins over St. Francis (PA) and Villanova. Led by junior Jami Servidone (Rensselaer, NY), the Friars defeated St. Francis (PA), 2-1 and also defeated BIG EAST rival Villanova, 5-3. Servidone completed the trip with a team high .414 batting average while she tallied 12 hits on 29 at bats. Three Friars each tallied six hits each including freshman Megan Wargin (Plantation, FL), sophomore Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, NY) and sophomore Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, NY). On the mound, junior Heather Nathan (S.Hempstead, NY) earned the win against Villanova on March 3. In her six appearances on the mound during the week, she tallied a team low 1.17 earned run average while pitching in a team high 30 innings. The Friars begin their north schedule on Tuesday, March 16 versus Fairfield at home at 2:00 pm. BIG EAST action begins on Saturday, April 3 against Connecticut.

MEN'S HOCKEY... Providence College posted a 0-1 mark last week. On March 7, PC was defeated, 6-5, in overtime by Northeastern at Boston, Mass. PC overcame a two-goal deficit in the final 34 seconds of the game, but NU scored with 1:00 remaining in overtime to earn the win. The Friar goals were scored by senior Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia), sophomore Jay Leach (Altamont, N.Y.), sophomore Heath Gordon (Pembroke, Mass.), senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) and senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta). Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 23 saves in the loss.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (19-11-3, 15-8-3)... PC posted a 1-1 mark in two ECAC games last week. On March 6, the Friars defeated Boston College, 5-2, at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Freshman Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) led the offense with two goals. Sophomore Jess Tabb (Springfield, Mass.), sophomore Corinne Rosen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and junior Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.) also scored for PC. Sophomore Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) made 21 stops in net. On March 7, Dartmouth defeated PC, 4-2, in Hanover, N.H. Senior Katie Lachapelle (Lewiston, Maine), and senior Myia Yates (St. Paul, Minn.) each scored for the Friars. DeCosta made 31 saves in the loss.
