Providence College Unveils New Athletic Logos
Sept. 12, 2002
The New Look
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College unveiled its new athletic logos today at noon on its athletic website at www.friars.com. The logos, which are part of Athletic Director Bob Driscoll's unified image for the athletic department, will be featured on athletic uniforms during the 2002-03 seasons.
The new primary logo features a profile of a Friar wearing a black cappa (hood). The Friar is pictured over a new Providence word mark. The logos will continue to be presented in the traditional black and white colors, which symbolize the ideals of the Dominican Order of Preachers, with silver (PMS 877) being a new color added to the logos. The word mark on the primary logo was designed so that each athletic team or athletic support group can be listed on a banner in the word mark.
All of the athletic teams will use the new wordmarks. However, the men's and women's hockey teams will continue to use the traditional "Skating Friar" logo on the uniforms. The "Skating Friar" has been worn on Friar jerseys since 1973.
"I believe that the athletic logo plays an important role in shaping the image of our student-athletes and the College," Driscoll stated. "Since I arrived at Providence, our goal has been to create a consistent message for the athletic department and this is a major step in that process while adhering to the traditions of the institutions."
The athletic department in conjunction with OCSN has redesigned the masthead on its website (www.friars.com) to be consistent with the new logos. The website will feature on-line sales of the new logo merchandise beginning on September 12 at noon.
New merchandise with Providence College athletic logos can be purchased at Bob's Stores in Cranston, R.I., Seekonk, Mass. and North Attleboro, Mass. The Providence College Bookstore and Sport Shop at Schneider Arena also will have the new logo merchandise. Plans are in place for other retail stores to start selling the merchandise prior to Christmas.
The new Providence College athletic logos were designed by Eric Rickabaugh of Rickabaugh Graphics in Gahanna, Ohio. Rickabaugh Graphics has created logos for a number of institutions, including The BIG EAST Conference, Seton Hall University, Xavier University and Ohio State.
All of the new logos are controlled under a licensing program administered by The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) of Atlanta. Royalties and licensing fees accrued through this avenue are returned to Providence College to help support the College and its athletic programs.
