Providence College Athletes Excel In Classroom During Fall Semester

Providence, R.I. - Providence College athletes performed as well in the classroom as they did on the playing fields during the 1998-99 fall semester. Thirteen of Providence College's 22 athletic teams had grade point averages of 3.0 or above during the 1998-99 semester.
Leading the way was the women's cross country and track teams recording a 3.18 grade point average. Thirteen of the 26 competing athletes on the women's team were named to the Dean's List. Leading the women's team was the BIG EAST's Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year, Gladys Ganiel who received a $4,000 postgraduate scholarship from the BIG EAST for her performances on the track and in the classroom.
Coming in second in the grade point category was the field hockey team with a 3.14 grade point as seven of the team's 18 players were members of the Dean's List. Men's tennis was third with a 3.098 grade point average with five of the team's 14 members taking Dean's List honors.
Rounding out the teams with 3.0 grade points were Volleyball (3.092), women's swimming (3.083), women's soccer (3.08), women's tennis (3.065), men's cross country and track (3.021) and men's swimming (3.010).
The women's soccer team was second to women's cross country and track with ten team members named to the Dean's List. Women's swimming followed with nine and field hockey had seven. Four teams had six members named to the Dean's List in the fall.
In all, 165 of Providence College's 352 athletes had grade points of 3.0 or better. Nine PC athletes had 4.0 grade points for the fall semester.
Providence College also has the BIG EAST Men's Scholar Athlete in baseball standout Angelo Ciminiello who will also receive the $4,000 postgraduate scholarship. Ganiel and Ciminiello winning the award marks just the second time in BIG EAST history that one school has had both award winners.
