Providence College Student-Athlete Advisory Board Reaches Out To The Community

Jan. 23, 2003

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) announced it has raised $2,800 for the Rhode Island Chapter of the Make a Wish Foundation. The board's latest contribution to the Foundation of $600, was raised through the organization of a student-athlete Christmas party held on December 8, 2002. The Christmas party was held at McPhail's in the lower level of Slavin Hall. More than 300 student-athletes purchased tickets and attended the event. All proceeds from ticket sales ($600) were collected and put toward the Make a Wish Foundation. The SAAB's goal for the academic year is to raise $6,000.

Matt Berk, a member of the Providence College men's lacrosse team, is the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. Berk is joined by 31 student-athletes at Providence College including Tyler McCabe (men's cross country/track and field), Courtney Dow (field hockey) and Jackie Powers (women's soccer) in the effort to raise more funds. McCabe heads up the SAAB Special Events Committee and was in charge of the student-athlete Christmas party. Dow is head of the Make-A-Wish Foundation Committee, and Powers is in charge of the Public Relations Committee.

Additional funds have been raised through the sale of donation cards, which have been posted in the stairway of Peterson Recreation Center. The men's ice hockey team also has made an independent donation of $200 to help the fundraising effort. Donation cards are still available for purchase through the Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

Other charitable efforts organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Board included a December 6th visit to the St. Mary's Home For Children. On this visit, 10 student-athletes representing four sports decorated Christmas ornaments, shared cookies and spent time with the children who reside in the home.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Board also is looking to create a greater sense of community among athletes on campus. In part with this effort, Father Tom Ertle has helped organize a Student-Athlete Mass for Thursday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. The mass will take place at St. Dominic Chapel.
