Galvin, Cappello Earn Athlete Of The Week Honors

Dermot Galvin (So., Kilrush, Ireland)... Galvin won the mile at the New England Challenge at Brown on January 15 and helped the Friars finish third of seven teams. Galvin finished the mile in a time of 4:17.17 and qualified for the New England Championship.
Heather Cappello (So., Lockport, N.Y.)...Cappello captured the 1,000 meter title at the New England Challenge on January 14 at Brown and helped the Friars place third of five teams. With her time of 2:58.20 in the 1,000 meters, Cappello qualified for the ECAC Championship.
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK...The women's track team scored 99 points and finished third of five teams at the New England Challenge Cup at Brown University in Providence, R.I. on Friday, January 14. The Friars were led by junior Joan Bohlke (Old Saybrook, Conn.), freshman Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) and sophomore Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.). Bohlke captured the 400 meter race in a time of 59.89 while McGettigan won the 800 meter title in a time of 2:18.47. Cappello earned a victory in the 1,000 meters, finishing in 2:58.20 and qualifying for the ECAC Championship. PC's 4 x 800 meter relay team of junior Francine Darroch (Cambridge, Ontario), sophomore Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.), sophomore Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) and Cappello won the race in a time of 9:34.82.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (8-8/1-2)...The Friars dropped their only game of the week, losing 71-61 at Rutgers on January 12th. PC was led by junior forward David Murray (Jr., Bronx, N.Y.) who scored a career high 16 points in the game. Erron Maxey (Jr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) added 14 points with eight rebounds and Romuald Augustin (Fr., Montreal, Que.) had 12 points versus the Scarlet Knights.
The Friars trailed 32-19 in the first half before going on a 20-2 run that put them up 39-34 with 17:39 left in the second half, but could not hold on. PC scored four more field goals that Rutgers, but the Scarlet Knights won the game on the foul line going 27-for-34 in the game, including 18-20 in the second half. The Friars made just 10-of-21 from the charity stripe.
The Friars will have eight days off before facing Villanova in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Providence Civic Center on Thursday, January 20th. That game will be televised via the New England Sports Network (NESN). The Friars will also be in action at home on Sunday, January 23rd when they face West Virginia in a 2:00 p.m. game. The West Virginia game can be seen on WJAR-TV 10 in Providence.
MEN'S HOCKEY (11-9-1, 3-7)... In its only game of the weekend, Providence skated to a 4-4 tie with Army on January 14 at West Point, N.Y. It marked the first tie ever between the two teams. The Friar goals were scored by senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta), sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.), senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) and senior Nick Lent (Westwood, Mass.). Freshman goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) recorded 20 saves in the game for PC.
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The men's track team scored 44 points and finished third of seven teams at the New England Challenge Cup at Brown University in Providence, R.I. on Saturday, January 15. The Friars were led by sophomore Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) and freshman Adam Sutton (Preston, England). Galvin won the mile in a time of 4:17.17 and Sutton captured the 3,000 meters in 8:38.69. Freshman Chris Livesey of Preston, England (second - 800 meters) and junior Ciaran Lynch of Limerick, Ireland (second - 3,000 meters) also ran strong races for the Friars. PC's 4 x 800 meter relay team and the distance medley team each earned a first-place finish. The 4 x 800 team won in a time of 7:55.12 and the distance medley squad finished first in a time of 10:34.51.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (10-5-3/7-4-3).... The Friars posted a 1-1-0 record last week. On January 15, PC defeated Maine, 8-2, at Maine's Alfond Arena, and on January 16, the squad dropped a 3-1 contest at New Hampshire.
At Maine, sophomores Jennifer Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.) and Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) paced the Friars, scoring two goals each. Junior Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.), senior Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.), junior Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) and freshman Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) all chipped in with a goal each. Sophomore Brigid Keady (Glencoe, Ill.) and junior Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) combined for 28 saves.
Versus New Hampshire, Tabb scored the lone Friar goal, and Decosta recorded 33 saves in the loss.
The squad will return to action on Jan. 20, at Gustavus Adolphus, at 8:05 p.m.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (1-3)(3-1)...Both squads will return to action on January 22 vs. Maine.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (8-6/3-2)... PC posted a 1-1 record last week. On January 12, the Friars earned a 77-76 victory over visiting Pittsburgh as junior Monika Roberts (Pittsburgh, Calif.) hit a layup at the buzzer. PC took its first lead of the game with 8:16 to play on a Roberts layup, and then tied the game at 71 with a free throw with 1:39 remaining. Roberts finished with 17 points to lead four Friars in double figures. On January 15, the Friars fell to No. 25 Boston College with a 72-52 loss at Conte Forum. Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) led all scorers for the night with her 20 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, January 19, when they travel to Jamaica, NY, to take on the Red Storm of St. John's University. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
