Poisson's Hat Trick Keys Rally As No. 8/9 Men's Hockey Defeats No. 13 UMass Lowell, 4-2

Poisson earned his second-career hat trick on Saturday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 8/9 men's ice hockey team rallied to a win on Saturday (Feb. 22), beating No. 13/13 UMass Lowell 4-2 at Schneider Arena. Graduate student Nick Poisson earned his second-career hat trick in the win with a goal in the first and a pair in the third period.

NOTES

- The Friars struck first 14:45 into the first period, as Nick Poisson collected a Chase Yoder pass in the neutral zone before skating it into Lowell's zone, firing on net and beating Welsch blocker-side to make it 1-0. Connor Kelley earned the secondary assist on a break-out pass to Yoder.

- UMass Lowell found the equalizer with 15:07 to go in the second period, as forward Scout Truman was awarded a penalty shot, where he beat Svedebäck through five-hole to tie the game at 1-1.

- The River Hawks found their second of the period with 1:51 to play, as Pierson Brandon corralled a lead pass from Owen Cole before directing it on net, beating Svedebäck high blocker-side on a tight angle to make it 2-1.

- Providence tied the game with 13:02 to play in the third period, as John Mustard caught a piece of a Chase Yoder rebound, sending the puck pinballing around the crease before deflecting off Nick Poisson's leg and into the back of the net, tying the game at 2-2.

- The Friars re-took the lead with just under three minutes to play, as Logan Sawyer fired on net before collecting his own rebound and cashing in on a wrap-around goal, giving Providence the 3-2 advantage. Tanner Adams and Logan Will were each credited assists on the score after winning the puck off the half-wall.

- With 1:22 remaining in the game, Nick Poisson won the puck in the neutral zone before firing a backhanded shot on the empty net, securing the 4-2 win for the Friars. With the goal, Poisson earned his second-career hat trick and the third hat trick of the season for the Friars, following Tanner Adams (Oct. 18 vs. Arizona State) and Hudson Malinoski (Feb. 1 @ UConn).

- Philip Svedebäck stood tall in the win, denying 17-of-19 shots on net, good for an .895 save percentage.

- Seven different Friars earned a point in the win, headlined by a three-goal effort from Nick Poisson and a pair of assists from Chase Yoder.

- Fifteen different Friars landed a shot on net in the win, paced by a five-shot showing from Logan Will and another four from Guillaume Richard and Logan Sawyer.

- The Friars honored their 11 graduate students and seniors prior to tonight's game.

- Providence and UMass Lowell finished their three-game series at 1-1-1.
