Men’s Basketball Defeated At No. 11/13 UConn, 87-84

Jayden Pierre led the Friars with a career-high 24 points.

STORRS, Conn. — The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the No. 11/13 UConn Huskies (12-3, 4-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Jan. 5 at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The Friars fell to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. Friar junior Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.)  led the way with a career and game-high 24 points, while senior Wesley Cardet Jr. (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 18 points.
 
FIRST HALF:
  • After a UConn basket, Wesley Cardet Jr. got the Friars on the board with a driving layup.
  • After a back-and-forth next few minutes, Jayden Pierre finished a thunderous two hand dunk over a defender followed by a deep three to cut the UConn lead to 12-11 at the first timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, Bensley Joesph (Arlington, Mass.) hit a three off of a Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J) assist to give the Friars their first lead at 16-14.
  • Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) scored two of the next three Friar buckets to give Providence a 24-22 lead with 8:00 remaining
  • The Friars held the Huskies scoreless for the next three minutes to take a 30-24 lead with 4:28 to go in the half.
  •  Mela converted a driving layup to cap a 9-0 PC run to end the half.
  • The Friars led 39-27 at the half
  • Pierre led all scorers with 10 first half points
  • The Friars shot 56.7 percent (17-30) in the half.
SECOND HALF:
  • Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) opened the second half scoring with a reverse layup
  • PC led at the first media timeout of the half, 47-36
  • Both teams made five consecutive field goals, including a three from Jayden Pierre to keep PC ahead at 58-51
  •  A 9-0 UConn run tied the game at 60-60 with 8:24 on the clock.  
  • UConn led 70-64 at the final media timeout, with 3:38 left in regulation.
  • UConn made six of eight field goals down the stretch to pull away from PC
  • UConn defeated PC, 87-84
HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Providence shot 30-60 (50%) from the field, 4-13 (31%) from three, and 20-23 (87%) from the line for the game.
  • UConn shot 27-48 (56%) from the field, 6-13 (46%) from three, and 27-32 (84%) from the line
  • Providence out-rebounded UConn, 32-22.
  • Three Friars finished in double figures: Pierre (24 points), Cardet (18 points), and Mela (10 points). Both Peirre and Mela recorded career highs.
  • Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) led the way with nine rebounds.
NOTES:
  • Today's game marked first time the team has played a game on NBC since the 1997-98 season - a 77-62 win over Notre Dame on February 28, 1998.
  • The Friars have registered a 31-50 mark all-time versus UConn.
  • The Friars have posted a 133-287 (.317) mark all-time versus top-25 teams, including a 0-3 mark this season.
  • The Friars were 0-2 versus UConn last season
  • In the most recent meeting between the two teams, UConn defeated PC, 74-60, at the Amica Mutual Pavillion on March 9, 2024
