PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas - The Providence College men's basketball team fell to the Oklahoma Sooners (5-0), 79-77, in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Nov. 27 in Paradise Island, Bahamas. With the loss, the Friars dropped to 5-1 on the season. Wesley Cardet (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Friars with a team-high 17 points, going 6-9 from the field, while adding two threes. Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) and Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) chipped in 16 points each. Pierre also added a team high 6 rebounds. Pierre had a three rim out as time expired in the game that would have proved to be the game winner.
FIRST HALF:
• Oklahoma opened with an 8-0 run before back-to-back Jayden Pierre (Elizebeth, N.J.) threes got the Friars within two.
• Oklahoma held a 9-6 lead over the Friars at the under-16-minute timeout (15:57).
• Friars went scoreless for 3:19 before a Wesley Cardet Jr (Tallahassee, Fla.) three cut the lead to 11-9. (13:12)
•Out of the under-12 TO, Corey Floyd Jr (Franklin, N.J.) knocked down a three to followed by a Cardet layup to tie the game at 14.
• With 10 minutes remaining in the half a Floyd transition three off a Bensley Joesph (Arlington, Mass) steal and assist gave the Friars their first lead of the game 17-16 (10:02).
• Friars forced back-to-back turnovers sparking a 7-0 run.
• A 12-2 Friar run ended by an Oklahoma layup, Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) responded with a three to put the Friars ahead 24-18.
• The teams traded three-point baskets out of the under-8 media timeout. The Friars maintained a 29-26 lead.
• A back-and-forth next few minutes led to a 31-28 Friar lead at the under 4 TO
• A Jospeh step back three pushed the Friar lead to six with two minutes to go in the half(2:13).
• Oklahoma regained control heading into the half holding the Friars scoreless in the last 2:44 of the half. The Friars led the Sooners 34-32 at the end of the first half.
• Five Friars contributed to the scoring in the first half. Wesley Cardet Jr. (Tallahassee, Fla.) spearheaded the way with 11 points, followed by Pierre with eight.
• Kobe Elvis led the Sooners in scoring with 12 followed by Jeremiah Fears with seven.
• The nine three pointers made in the first half was the most the Friars had made in a half this season.
• PC held a 22-15 edge over Oklahoma in rebounds at half.
• Providence shot 10-29 (34.5%) from the field, 9-22 (40.9%) from three, and 5-9 (55.6%) from the free-throw line.
• Oklahoma shot 12-27 (44.4%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three and 6-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
• A steal by Pierre lead to a Floyd three to open the second half.
• The Friars held a 42-41 lead at the under-16 timeout.
• An 8-0 Sooner run was snapped by a pair of Joseph free throws to cut the deficit to 49-46.
• A three from Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) cut the Oklahoma lead to two (57-55) at the 8:23 mark.
• Three straight Oklahoma field goals extended the lead 64-57 with six minutes remaining in the second half.
• The two teams traded field goals as Cardet made back-to-back driving layups to cut the Sooner lead to six leading up to the under-4 media timeout. (3:57)
• Back-to-back baskets by Joseph and Cardet trimmed the Oklahoma lead to 69-66 with 3:02 to play.
• A pair of free throws and a pull up jump shot pushed the Oklahoma lead to seven, proving too much for the Friars to overcome
• The Friars forced a turnover followed by a Floyd layup with 5.8 seconds remaining
• Oklahoma was issued a technical foul with 2.5 seconds left for too many men on the floor. Pierre knocked down two free throws to cut the Sooner lead to two.
• Pierre pulled up from 35 feet as time expired, but his shot came up strong off the back iron and the Friars fell just short of a comeback bid.
• The Friars fell to Oklahoma 79-77.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence finished 24-56(42.9%) from the field, 12-33(36.4%) from three and 17-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line.
• Oklahoma finished 25-49 (51.0%) from the field, 7-19 (36.8%) from three and 22-29 (75.9%) from the free throw line.
• Four Friars scored in double figures: Wesley Cardet (17), Bensley Joseph (16), Jayden Pierre (16), and Corey Floyd (13).
• PC outrebounded the Sooners, 38-25, including 16-10 in the second half.
• Kobe Elvis led the Sooners offense with 26 points.
