Former Friar Janai Crooms Set To Play For Rwanda In 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket

The tournament will be held in Kigali, Rwanda on July 28 – August 5.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former Providence College women's basketball player Janai Crooms (Cranston, R.I.) was named to Rwanda's final roster slated to compete in the 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket. The 28th edition of the tournament will run between July 28 to August 5 and will be held at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.  
 
Crooms played two seasons with the Friars from 2021-23. During her career at Providence she was a All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection (2021-22), a Preseason All-BIG EAST pick (2022-23) and a five-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection. She finished her collegiate career, which also included stops at Ohio State and Michigan State, with 1,353 career points, 725 rebounds and 449 assists. During her final season at Providence, Crooms averaged a team-best 11.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
 
This will be Crooms' first taste of international basketball competition. Rwanda will compete in Group A alongside Angola and Cote d'Ivoire. Once the group phase of the competition is complete, classification play will begin on August 3.
 
The 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket Tournament is comprised of 12 teams – Angola, Cameroon, Congo DR, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, Guinea, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda. In addition to crowning the 2023 AfroBasket champions, the two finalists of the tournament will move on to compete in the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT), which is scheduled for February 2024.
