HALIFAX, N.S. - Providence College Head Swimming and Diving Coach John O'Neill and Senior Associate Athletic Director John Rock were honored on July 6 with the Rob Thompson Award at the 39th Annual Danny Gallivan Golf Tourney in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Gallivan tourney has now raised over $2 million to help fund cutting-edge research for Cystic Fibrosis.
O'Neill helped Rock develop PC's Jane Thompson Award in memory of Jane Thompson '99. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Thompson was a member of the Women's Swimming and Diving team, graduating in 1999. Jane was born with and lived her life with Cystic Fibrosis. She never let her disease get in her way and her zest for life was evident to all that knew her. Jane loved being a student-athlete and she being a member of the Friar community. This award is presented to the male or female senior student-athlete, who, through the course of their career at PC, set him/herself apart from fellow student-athletes in the areas of public/community service and outreach to others. An individual who shows selflessness and caring for those around him or her and looks to what he or she can do to help others without the need to be recognized. An individual who personifies all that is good about being a student-athlete at Providence College and exhibits selflessness, dedication, loyalty, courage, and perseverance under the most extreme personal circumstances.
O'Neill and Rock, representing Providence College, were cited for their ongoing support for the tournament. In their remarks, O'Neill commented that Jane was "a gift to the college and our program," while Rock said, "being part of the Friends of Robbie and Jane Group has been inspiring."
