PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Athletics finished eighth overall in NCAA Division I Community Service with seven teams finishing in the top-10 in the 2022-2023 school year in a report released by Helper Helper on Friday (May 5).
Providence finished eighth in the NCAA for community service hours and was the only school to represent the BIG EAST conference in the top-25. Since July 1, 2022, 408 Friar student-athletes have logged a combined 3,750 hours volunteering at 127 events serving 34 different organizations. The economic impact of these hours totaled $107,045.
Â
Seven teams have also been recognized in the top-10 in the country in service hours.
Women's Cross Country and Track finished second in the nation in Division I Cross Country and Track by logging 575 hours and teaming up with organizations such as Girls on the Run RI, Special Olympics and Relay for Life. The team also won the annual Driscoll Cup competition at the end of the year All-Sports Gala. Formerly known as The Friar Cup, the name of the award was changed to the Driscoll Cup in 2022 to honor former Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll. Driscoll served as AD for 21 years until his retirement on June 30, 2022. The winner of the Driscoll Cup is determined through a competition among all varsity teams each academic year, which provides student-athletes with the opportunity to earn points in various categories – comÂpetitive performance, academic performance and community service and involvement.
Â
Men's Soccer finished fifth in the nation in Division I Men's Soccer by logging 306 hours working with Team IMPACT, Project Goal Line and Special Olympics RI.
Field Hockey finished in sixth place in Division I Field Hockey by logging 252 hours teaming up with organizations such as Surfrider RI and Go4TheGoal. During the team's annual Field Hockey Friendzy, the team raised over $1,400 to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital Tumor Research.
Men's Swimming and Diving also finished in sixth place in Division I Swimming and Diving while the women placed 10th in the nation. The men's and women's teams logged 215 hours and 258 hours, respectively. They teamed up with Swim Across America, Adopt A Family – DaVinci Center, Special Olympics RI and Team IMPACT. Through their partnership with Swim Across America, the program raised over $56,000 to support the Oncology Center at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence.
 Â
Lacrosse placed eighth in the nation in Division I Men's Lacrosse logging 161 hours teaming up with organizations such as Team IMPACT, Special Olympics RI and Goodnight Lights at Hasbro Children's Hospital.
Women's Basketball also placed eighth in the nation in Division I Women's Basketball logging 198 hours teaming up with organizations such as Team IMPACT, Relay for Life and the Providence Rec Department.
One hundred percent participation from all student-athletes came through two yearly efforts led by SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Council). Each night, community members gather outside of Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence to wave goodnight to children who are battling serious illness. During the fall and spring semesters, student-athletes representing all 19 varsity sports, gathered outside of the hospital on two different evenings with flashlights and Friar signs to wish the children goodnight.
Â
In addition, each team adopts children for Christmas through the DaVinici Center's Adopt-A-Family project. The Adopt-A-Family Project is a program set in place to improve the quality of life for the residents in the North End of Providence. The families work with the center throughout the year in a variety of ways. This specific program matches donors with children in need to provide gifts of clothing and toys during the Christmas season. All 19 varsity athletic sports teams at Providence College were assigned a group of children to help provide for. This year, over 400 gifts were delivered to the center for 115 children from 40 local families.
