CHICAGO, Ill. - The Providence College men's and women's track & field teams competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 25. At the end of the first day of competition, the women are in sixth with 19 points and the men are tied for sixth with nine points.
On the women's side,
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) won her heat in the mile with a finish time of 4:55.10. Flockhart automatically qualifies for the finals which begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.
In the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries,
Nicole Borowiec's finish of 8.78 set a new Providence College Indoor Track record and served as a personal best. Automatically qualifying for finals, she will compete again tomorrow at 11:20 a.m.
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ire.) placed second in her heat in the 800-meter preliminaries (2:11.27), automatically qualifying for finals tomorrow at 12:20 p.m.
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ire.) finished runner-up in the 5,000-meters in 16:18.49. She was followed by
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) and
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ire.) who finished fourth (16:21.22) and ninth (16:48.78), respectively, also with top-10 finishes.
The women featured a strong distance medley team of
Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand),
Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.),
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) and Kimberely May (Auckland, New Zealand). The Friars finished third with a time of 11:28.32
On the men's side,
Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) competed in the mile trials. White finished second (4:14.61) in his heat and automatically qualify for the finals. The finals of the men's mile will begin at 11:10 a.m.
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ire.) and
David McGlynn (Waterford, Ire.) both had strong showings in the 5,000 meters, placing seventh (14:12.73) and eighth (14:19.34), respectively. The two were followed by
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y) in 12th (14:25.60) and 14
th (14:34.39), who both tabbed personal bests.
The men's distance medley also had a strong performance from a team of
Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.),
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.),
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.) and
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand). The group finished third in a time of 9:44.42.
The second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships feature the finals of the mile, 800 meters and 60M Hurdles. Providence will also race in the men's and women's 3,000 meter, the men's high jump and both the men's and women's 4x800m and 4x400m. Events begin at 10:20 a.m. tomorrow and will be live streamed on FloSports.
