Friars Fall To No. 25 Villanova In BIG EAST Home Opener, 79-54

Janai Crooms recorded her second double-double of the season on 16 points and 10 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 25 Villanova, 79-54, in BIG EAST action at Alumni Hall on Dec. 4. The Friars fell to a nationally-ranked opponent for the second-straight game and dropped to 6-4 overall (0-2 BIG EAST). Villanova improved to 7-2 (1-1 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
Kylee Sheppard and Janai Crooms scored back-to-back buckets in the first minute of play to give Providence a 4-0 lead.
• The Wildcats answered with three-consecutive three-point buckets to take a 9-4 edge.
• Villanova used a 10-0 run during a span of 3:21 to take a 23-8 lead with 1:48 on the clock.
Olivia Olsen halted the run with a traditional three-point play with 1:25 on the clock (23-11).
• Nova's Bella Runyan and Crooms traded three-point buckets to end the quarter (26-14).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Villanova used a 7-1 run midway through the second quarter to take a 37-21 edge into the media timeout at the 4:31 mark.
• Another 6-0 spurt late in the quarter helped Nova extend its lead to 20 (45-25).
• The Wildcats took a 48-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
• Providence shot just 33-percent from the floor (9-27), including 2-7 from three-point territory (.286).
• The Wildcats converted 56-percent of their shot attempts (20-36), including a 7-16 showing from beyond the arc (.438).
• Crooms paced the Friars in the first half with 11 points, while Maddy Siegrist netted 20 points for Villanova.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Villanova got out to a 25-point lead (54-29) with 7:28 on the clock.
• Providence scored 10-unanswered points over the next 5:25 to cut the deficit to 15 (54-39).
• Lucy Olsen knocked down a triple at the 1:44 mark to get Villanova back on the board.
• Providence outscored the Wildcats 14-11 in the quarter and trailed 59-41 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Wildcats held a 71-48 lead at the media timeout (3:52) after outscoring Providence 7-4 through the first 6:08 of the frame.
• Villanova outscored Providence 20-13 in the quarter overall and claimed the 79-54 victory.
 
 
NOTES:
• Crooms posted her second double-double of the season, and ninth of her career, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also added two assists and one blocked shot.
• Olsen added eight points and seven boards for Providencxe, while Grace Efosa chipped in seven points.
• Siegrist, the BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and league's leading scorer, completed the day with 29 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
• Providence held a slim 33-32 advantage in rebounding. The Friars have outrebounded eight of their 10 opponents this season and have a 6-2 record in those games.
• Villanova outscored Providence 22-8 in points off turnovers.
 
UP NEXT:
• The Friars will remain home at Alumni Hall to host a pair of non-conference games against Brown on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7:00 p.m. and Central Connecticut on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
