CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – The Providence College swimming & diving programs opened the 2022-23 campaign at the Boston College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The men's program finished fourth with a total of 437 points, while the women's team placed fifth with 285 points.
The men's team placed inside the top-five in six events.
Will Layden claimed the Friars' lone first-place finish on the day as he won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.93.
Kevin Hood had a solid afternoon, finishing inside the top three in two individual events. He placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.25) and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:10.33).
Ryan Sharp rounded out the list of notable individual performances with a fifth-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly (51.92).
A pair of relay teams finished third in their respective events, including the 200-yard freestyle relay, which was made up of
McGovern Brown,
Alex Beauchene,
Brian Cantin and Layden (1:25.25). The 400-yard medley relay team of Brown, Hood, Sharp and Layden also finished third in a time of 3:27.72.
On the women's side,
Annie Gathof posted a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly (2:11.36) and the 500-yard freestyle event (5:19.06).
Grace Erickson claimed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.70) and went on to lead the opening leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay as it claimed fourth place in a time of 1:40.24. Erickson was joined by
Courtney Reilly,
Sally Alrutz and
Taylor Loud.
The Friars will return home to Taylor Natatorium to host Fairfield on Oct. 28. The action is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
