PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team held the Mal Brown Intra-Squad Scrimmage on Saturday, October 15 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. The Black Team, led by graduate student Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.), earned an 87-84 victory over the White Team, led by sophomore Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.). Hopkins notched a game-high 29 points and Bynum recorded 23 points.

FIRST HALF:

  • Croswell scored the first basket of the game for the Black Team. The Black Team jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. 
  • At the 16:55 mark, redshirt freshman Floyd, Jr. finished in the paint to put the White Team on the board. Locke responded with a three-pointer from the top of the key for the Black Team. 
  • The Black Team led, 11-4, at the first timeout of the game.
  • Locke opened the game 3-4 from three-point territory. The Black Team held a commanding lead, 25-10, with under 12 minutes remaining in the half. 
  • Croswell and Locke led the way for the Black Team throughout the first half. Carter was the focal point of the white offense. 
  • At the 4:28 mark, Hopkins stepped in front of a pass and finished a contested layup in transition. The White Team cut into the deficit, trailing 36-23.
  • Breed made tough layups on back-to-back possessions for the Black Team in the final minutes. Breed had nine points heading into halftime. 
  • Floyd, Jr. made the tip-in layup for the White Team at the halftime buzzer. 
  • The Black Team held a 46-34 lead at the half. 
  • The White Team shot 16-33 (48.5%) from the field, 2-6 (33.3%) from three, and did not attempt a free throw in the first half. 
  • The Black Team shot 19-38 (50.0%) from the field, 5-13 (38.5%) from three, and 3-7 (42.9%) from the free throw line in the first half. 

SECOND HALF:

  • Hopkins scored the opening basket of the second half for the White Team.
  • After a strong start by the White Team, the deficit was in the single digits for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. 
  • With 13 minutes remaining, the Black Team's lead had dwindled to four, 52-48. 
  • Midway through the second half, Moore knocked down two three-pointers to continue the White Team's offensive surge. 
  • Bynum buried a three-pointer from the right corner with seven minutes to play. The Black Team extended their lead back to 11, 71-60. 
  • Led by Hopkins, the White Team made another run, cutting the deficit to five before the final media timeout. 
  • Pierre made it a one-possession game, 74-71, with three minutes to play. Croswell responded right away for the Black Team with a jump hook in the paint. 
  • At the 1:41 mark, Bynum drew the foul and drained a three-ball. He completed the four-point play to give the Black Team an 82-75 advantage. Bynum quickly forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. 
  • With three seconds remaining, Carter made a second-chance layup for the White Team, cutting the deficit to only two, 86-84. On the following possession, Bynum missed one free throw, leaving the door open for the White Team.
  • With a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, Carter was too strong on a half-court three-point attempt. 

NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The White Team finished 35-65 (53.8%) from the field, 7-17 (41.2%) from three, and 7-10 (70.0%) from the free throw line.
  • The Black Team finished 32-64 (50.0%) from the field, 10-23 (43.5%) from three, and 13-21 (61.9%) from the free throw line.
  • Eight of the 11 participating players in the game finished in double figures. 
  • The starting lineup for the Black Team played for the entire duration of the game. The White Team utilized a six-man rotation. 
  • Castro (Black Team) finished with a game-high 12 rebounds. 
  • Pierre (White Team) and Bynum (Black Team) each added a game-high seven assists. 
  • Attendance – 2,134
