PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College Vice President and Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today [Aug. 25] that the Athletic Department will launch The Friar Edge student-athlete development program in coordination with the opening of the 2021-22 academic year.
The Friar Edge is focused on a holistic approach to student-athlete development. The comprehensive four-year model is based on six pillars of development, which include personal enhancement, academics, community, leadership, career and diversity, equity & inclusion. Programming related to The Friar Edge will be tailored and structured to meet the needs of student-athletes as they progress through their four-year college experience.
"The Friar Edge program fulfills the commitment to our student-athletes to reach their full potential by preparing them with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to be successful now and in the future," Driscoll said. "The Edge represents the relentless desire to rise together as competitors, scholars and engaged citizens who will trailblaze the future."
The Friar Edge was established under the direction of the Student-Athlete Development Team (SADT). The program was created to bring all areas of student-athlete development under one umbrella in an effort to streamline educational information and opportunities. The curriculum will include intentional and sequential programming geared specifically to each class' needs.
The SADT conducted a needs assessment that included listening tours, surveys and focus groups with each of the College's coaches and all student-athletes to set priorities for content, formatting and delivery of programming. These aspects are critical to ensure that The Friar Edge is optimizing student-athlete participation, attention to the subject matter and retention of information.
