PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today (May 3) that Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.) has signed an athletic aid agreement and will transfer to Providence College from the University of South Carolina. Minaya, who will graduate from South Carolina this spring, will come to Providence as a graduate transfer and he will be eligible to play in 2021-22.
"We are looking forward to having Justin Minaya as part of the Friar family next season," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "Justin has played at a high level for the last four seasons. He has seen a lot of action in the SEC over his career. He has started 75 of the 79 games during his college career. Justin is an excellent rebounder and will bring a tough defensive presence to our lineup. He is a quality individual and he will be another veteran leader on our roster."
In his four years at South Carolina, Minaya averaged 7.6 points and 5.3 rebounds over his 79 games. Minaya has scored 602 points and grabbed 420 rebounds. He also averaged 28.4 minutes per game over his career, including a career-high 30.1 mpg in 2020-21. This past season, he registered a career-best 6.3 rebounds per game, which was tops on the Gamecocks. He was fourth on the team in scoring in 2020-21 as he averaged 7.0 ppg. As a junior, he registered a career high 18 points at Texas A&M. Minaya posted a single-game career-high of 12 rebounds versus Vanderbilt in 2020.
