Watson and Horchler combined for 35 points.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The No. 6 seeded Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the No. 11 seeded DePaul Blue Demons, 70-62, on Wednesday, March 10 in the First Round of the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The Friars record moved to 13-13 overall.

Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) registered 18 points and nine rebounds in the game. Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) added 17 points and seven rebounds.

"It just was not meant to be for the Friars this year, and that is unfortunate," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "I appreciate [the players'] effort all season. They are wonderful kids. Hopefully I can do a better job with our next group when they come in."

DePaul held the Friars scoreless for the first 2:34 minutes of the game. At the 17:22 mark, Watson put the Friars on the board. Neither team found much success on offense to open the game. DePaul led 5-4 at the first media timeout.

At the 9:19 mark, junior David Duke (Providence, R.I.) made a mid-range jumper for his first field goal of the game. On the next possession, DePaul's Charlie Moore buried a three-pointer. The Friars responded with an 8-0 scoring run, powered by sophomore Brycen Goodine (New Bedford, Mass.). The Friars trailed by only one, 21-20.

With 6:41 left in the half, Goodine knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner. The Friars regained the lead. Duke added a jumper at the 5:35 mark. The Friars had made five of their last seven attempts from the field. The Friars led 25-24.

Ahead of the final timeout of the half, Horchler converted from three-point territory on back-to-back possessions. Horchler was the only Friar to reach double-figures before halftime. The teams traded several baskets in the final minutes.

The Friars led at the half, 36-35. Providence shot 12-32 (37.5%) from the field, 3-12 (25.0%) from three, and 9-16 (56.3%) from the free throw line. DePaul shot 12-29 (41.4%) from the field, 4-11 (36.4%) from three, and 7-11 (63.6%) from the free throw line.

With 14:20 remaining, A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down his first three-pointer of the game. At the 11:28 mark, Horchler added his fourth three-pointer to end a Friars scoring drought of over two minutes. DePaul led 49-46.
