Men’s Basketball Upsets No. 20/22 Connecticut On The Road, 57-53

AJ Reeves leads the Friars with 16 points.


HARTFORD, Conn.
– The Providence College men's basketball team (11-1, 1-0) opened the BIG EAST season with a 57-53 victory at No. 20/22 Connecticut (9-3, 0-1).  The victory gave the Friars their 124th win versus a ranked opponent.  The Friars were led by senior AJ Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.), who had a game-high 16 points as he was 4-8 from three-point territory.  Senior Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds.  Junior Jared Bynum (Largo, Md) returned to action after missing four games with a leg injury and added nine points and six rebounds.
 
"We knew coming on the road would be a challenge for us," Friar Head Coach Ed Cooley said.  "I was proud of our players' preparation all week.  I thought they did a really good job paying attention to detail and understanding the importance of a BIG EAST game."
 
 
1st Half:
• The Friars finished the half with 31-22 lead -their biggest lead of the first half.
• AJ Reeves led the Friars with 12 points on 4-5 shooting from three-point territory.
|• Friars shot 41.9 percent overall (13-31) and  40 percent (4-10) from three.
• UConn was 8-29 (27.6 percent) from the field and 2-12 from three (16.7 percent).
 
2nd Half:
•With 10 minutes to go in the game, Al Durham made a layup to give the Friars their largest lead of the game – 16 points (48-32).
• UConn chipped away at the lead and got it down to two points before Durham made a layup with 45 seconds remaining to push the lead to four points (57-53).
•The Friars shot 37 percent (10-27) in the second half while UConn was 11-32 (34.4 percent).


NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Friars captured their first win of the season versus a ranked squad with the win over No. 20/22 UConn.
• Friars are 11-1 for just the second time in Ed Cooley's 11 seasons as a head coach at Providence.
• Friars have posted a season-best six-game winning streak.
• Friars shot 39.7 percent (23-58) for the game, while UConn shot 19-61 (31.1 percent)
• The Friars were outrebounded, 43-40.
